Fernando Trueba is putting the final touches to his forthcoming feature production, El Artista y la Modelo (“The Artist and the Model”), which is co-scripted by Jean Claude Carrière and will start shooting in mid-September in the South of France. The director confirmed this to Cineuropa at the 6th Madrid de Cine – Spanish Film Screenings, which closed yesterday and where he was promoting his delightful animated film Chico & Rita [+see also:

El Artista y la Modelo will be set during the German occupation of the Second World War, “although, like my other films, it isn’t particularly political, it’s the story of an old artist”, commented Trueba, who won an Oscar in 1994 for The Age of Beauty.

Comparisons with the life of Malaga-born artist Pablo Picasso are inevitable, and Trueba admits to having been inspired by certain aspects of his life: “There are elements of Picasso and Cezanne. Maillol also served as inspiration, but there are even bits of Hockney in there. It’s like when you write a novel: sometimes the writer puts in something of himself, the people he knows, his family and friends”.

“I’ve been wanting to tell this story for over 20 years. I started to write it at different periods in my life. I kept thinking I wasn’t old enough to tell this story. Now I’ve realised I’m not so young any more [laughs]”, said Trueba of what will be his twelfth feature.

The lead couple will be played by French actor Jean Rochefort and Catalan actress Aida Folch. El Artista y la Modelo will also be Trueba’s first French-language feature (“I owe a lot to French culture. During the Franco years, France was the closest place to see films and buy books which were banned here”) with French production backing, for it will be co-produced by the director’s company Fernando Trueba PC and France-based Bonne Pioche.
