Mortadelo and Filemón return to the cinema in a “terrific” 3D film

The two most well-known comic characters in Spain, the outrageous secret agents Mortadelo and Filemón, created by cartoonist Francisco Ibáñez, will return to cinemas in 2014 with Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo. However, unlike the recent and very successful adaptations, La gran aventura de Mortadelo y Filemón(2003)and Mortadelo y Filemón – Misión: Salvar la tierra [+see also:

(2007), which together raised over thirty million Euro, this time round they will do so with a 3D computer animated film.

The director will be Javier Fesser, author of the first successful adaptation of the comic in 2003, who has defined it as “an urban, domestic tale, with clear references to the present time, 100 per cent Mortadelo and Filemón”. He has gone further to say that this will be “a family-friendly motion picture performance, if ever there were one, meant to make you laugh.”

Fesser and a team of over 150 artists and technicians have been working for four years in complete secrecy in the Ilion Animation Studios in Madrid (where the most ambitious animation production in the history of Spanish cinema, Planet 51 [+see also:

was born). “It’s all about using the latest CGI animation technology, modeling, digital effects and lighting to reproduce the boundless expressive capacity of the characters and the universe of vibrant colours created by Ibáñez, just as he designed it,” claimed Fesser, who has proposed to maintain “that wonderfully timeless and universally Spanish flavour, that is unveiled in his comic strips.”

The script has been written by Fesser himself with Claro García and Cristóbal Ruiz and will be produced by Luis Manso and Francisco Ramos for Zeta Cinema and Películas Pendelton with the collaboration of TVE, TV3, Canal+ and ONO.

Warner Bros. Pictures Intl. España will distribute Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo from 28 November 2014.
