For the European Film Academy, 2020 is about social class, religion and… alcohol. Announced today, the leading nominees for the upcoming 33rd European Film Awards, which will take place in a virtual ceremony streamed from Berlin on 12 December (read news), are Pietro Marcello’s Martin Eden [+see also:

. All three have garnered four nominations, coincidentally in the same categories: European Film, European Director, European Actor (for Luca Marinelli, Bartosz Bielenia and Mads Mikkelsen, respectively) and European Screenwriter. An interesting feat for a very male trident, composed of some of the most successful films of the season, with the first two coming from last year’s edition of the Venice Film Festival, and the third hailing from the 2020 Cannes selection then later selected at the San Sebastián Film Festival.

During an event streamed from the 17th Seville European Film Festival, hosted at the usual premises by the Gualdalquivir river albeit without any physical guests, and joined by EFA director Marion Döring online from Berlin, EFA chairman Mike Downey stated that exceptionally this year, “the EFA increased the number of nominations in the main categories to focus on European films in what has been an extremely difficult year for the industry”.

Alongside the three leading films, other titles have been selected by the EFA committee, such as Burhan Qurbani’s Berlin Alexanderplatz [+see also:
