It might have proved impossible for the 59th edition of Critics’ Week to unspool in Cannes in person as a result of the health crisis, but the Croisette-based parallel section is continuing to shine a light on emerging talent and has now put together a support programme, “Cannes Outside the Walls”, for the five feature films and ten shorts selected by the team overseen by artistic director Charles Tesson.

Standing tall among the works set to benefit from the “Critics’ Week 2020” label are two first feature films from French female directors: Skies of Lebanon [+see also:

by France’s Naël Marandin, which stars Diane Rouxel, Jalil Lespert, Olivier Gourmet and Finnegan Oldfield in its cast.

In terms of the French-language films gracing this year’s selection, these works will be presented under the banner of a “Critics’ Week Carte Blanche”, held within the Angoulême Francophone Film Festival (running 28 August – 2 September).

The Gan Foundation Distribution Award, meanwhile, will go ahead as planned, with the winning French distributor - chosen from among the five selected feature films - due to be announced in the autumn, while the Next Step trophy has been awarded to Camille Degeye’s project Sphynx (produced by Société Acéphale).

As for the non-competitive programme comprising the 10 selected shorts, this will be screened via the Festival Scope Pro platform between 19 – 25 October, before being made available to the general public. This digital distribution will be accompanied by previews at the Cinémathèque Française and screenings at the Czech and New York film archives (in collaboration with Kinoscope).

The movies bearing the "Critics’ Week 2020" label are as follows:
