UK sales agent HanWay Films has announced the French sale to ARP of Jerzy Skolimowski’s EO [+leggi anche:

. The film, starring Sandra Drzymalska, Isabelle Huppert, Lorenzo Zurzolo and Mateusz Kosciukiewicz, is bowing in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Eo is presented by Polish outfit Skopia Film and Britain’s Jeremy Thomas. HanWay Films’ founder, Thomas, said, “ARP is the best possible home for Eo!”

Skolimowski and Thomas have a long-standing relationship, which began when Thomas produced his second film, The Shout, which won the Grand Prix du Jury at Cannes in 1978. Skolimowski and Thomas also collaborated on Essential Killing [+leggi anche:

Inspired by Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar, the film looks at the world from the perspective of Eo, a grey donkey with melancholic eyes, who meets good and bad people on his life’s path. But not even for a moment does he lose his innocence.

HanWay Films’ Cannes slate also includes Meg Ryan’s What Happens Later, starring Ryan herself and David Duchovny; Uberto Pasolini’s The Return, starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche; Branded, an origin story of organised crime gangs in the USA’s prison system, directed by Kieron Hawkes; Stefano Mordini’s 2 Win, starring Riccardo Scamarcio, Daniel Brühl and Volker Bruch (see the news); and Kitty Green’s social thriller The Royal Hotel [+leggi anche:

Inspired by true life events around the fabled 1983 World Rally Championship, 2 Win captures the intense rivalry between Germany (Audi) and Italy (Lancia). Lebowski is producing the film, with the UK’s Recorded Picture Company and France’s Metropolitan Films co-producing. RAI is the Italian distributor.It is being produced by Jeremy Thomas together with Scamarcio. It will commence production in mid-May in Italy and Greece.

Meanwhile, The Return will reunite two-time Academy Award nominee and BAFTA Award winner Ralph Fiennes, and Academy and BAFTA Award winner Juliette Binoche (Both Sides of the Blade [+leggi anche:

). The film is an original take on Homer’s The Odyssey, with a script by John Collee (Master & Commander) and renowned UK playwright Edward Bond (Blow-Up). The Return is being produced by James Clayton and Pasolini for the UK’s Red Wave Films. Roberto Sessa’s Italian company Picomedia is providing funding.

) comes The Royal Hotel, a social thriller inspired by true events. Rising star Jessica Henwick (The Matrix Resurrections) and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) will star with two-time Emmy Award winner Julia Garner (Inventing Anna, Ozark). Filming will start in Australia in the summer.

Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally) will direct and star alongside David Duchovny (The X Files) in What Happens Later, an evolved and nostalgic take on the romantic comedy. The film is based on the play Shooting Star by Steven Dietz. What Happens Later is a US movie produced by Ten Acre Films, Laura D Smith and Kristin Mann, with Rockhill Studios and Bleeker Street on board as executive producers.

Finally, Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike), Academy Award nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Movie Film), Tom Hopper (Umbrella Academy) and Frank Grillo (Lamborghini) star in Branded, based on the New Yorker article “The Brand”. The film will be directed by Kieron Hawkes (Power), from a screenplay by Alessandro Camon.
