by Turkish director and screenwriter Aydin Orak is set across a torrid summer in a Kurdish city in Turkey. A pair of brilliant but unruly twins (Mirza and Mirhat Zarg) hailing from a disadvantaged neighbourhood are distracted from their daily routine and their schoolwork by one determined aim: diving into a real swimming pool; specifically, the one which is located within a luxurious building on their way to school. Standing between them and their dream is a boundary wall and, behind this, the stubborn and irreproachable guard whom they ridicule each and every day... This is how they embark upon their mini class war.

Aydın Orak has lengthy theatre experience as a director, interpreter and translator, and he also signed his name to a documentary and two docudramas prior to making this first fiction film of his. In respect of Time of Impatience, he explains that “as someone who has lived in poor neighbourhoods for many years, I’d dreamed for a long time of talking about my human experience through film. Based upon my observations, newly built luxury sites and the slums which sit next to them present an image of great contradiction and opposition. I decided to express this contradiction by way of the twins’ feelings, based on a real-life story which I’d heard while visiting a friend. This story, which started out as pleasant, but which turned into a terrible tragedy, had quite a huge influence on me. The subject I’d been mulling over for around 15 years eventually gave rise to Time of Impatience”.

Starring in the cast alongside the twins are Pelin Batu, Iştar Gokseven, Ali Seçkiner Alici and Feride Çetin. Vedat Oyan is the film’s director of photography while editing comes courtesy of Murat Hasari.

Time of Impatience, which won the two main prizes at the Antalya Film Forum when still a work in progress, is produced by Aydin Orak himself and Salih Suleymani on behalf of Orak Film, in co-production with Serhat Dumlu and Feyzi Baran. International sales are entrusted to Italian firm Intramovies.

Here’s the film’s teaser, in an exclusive for Cineuropa.
