“I’ve spent the last 30 years in this line of work, and I can’t imagine a more rewarding job. It’s collaborative and never gets repetitive,” says Lori Balton, describing her job as a location scout for all kinds of shoots. Among her most recent gigs are Top Gun: Maverick, projects with Aaron Sorkin for Amazon, and with Damien Chazelle for Paramount. “My favourite part is the scouting, at all stages of the process,” she states. And indeed, these searches have taken her to varied places such as Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Morocco, France, Italy, Vietnam, Portugal, Iceland and Lapland. At the Shooting Locations Marketplace, she hopes to encounter both new locations and new production service companies, given that a shooting plan requires a prior investigation into logistical matters, such as permits, accommodation, transport, support companies and so on.

The Shooting Locations Marketplace is a recruitment market where the locations and strategic service providers will meet with the decision makers involved in selecting settings and locations. In addition, around a dozen film commissions have announced that they will be taking part in the Shooting Locations Marketplace: those from the Canary Islands, Majorca, La Rioja, Castilla y León, the Costa Blanca and Navarre, among others.

The Shooting Locations Marketplace has signed cooperation deals with the most important professional associations and specialist media outlets, in an effort to make this first edition a business-orientated meeting place that will contribute to the development and consolidation of the sector: the Association of Audiovisual Production Professionals (APPA), which can boast 170 members from the world of film, television and advertising; PROFILM, an organisation that gathers production companies which are developing audiovisual projects with third countries in Spain; the Audiovisual Industry Allicance (ALIA), which gathers the main technical and service companies across all stages of the production process; the Advertising Film Producers’ Association (APCP); and media outlets such as Audiovisual451, Cine y Tele and Cineuropa.

The Shooting Locations Marketplace project, which has an international scope, has been developed by the Valladolid Trade Fair Centre and is aimed at the entire audiovisual sector. In 2021, it is set to become a platform to facilitate business-focused contact between shooting destinations and producers who find themselves in search of locations. It has been organised in collaboration with the Spain Film Commission.
