, directed by Ferit Karahan, has won the Moon of Valencia Award for Best Feature at the 36th edition of the Cinema Jove festival, a proudly and fiercely youthful gathering that unspooled in Valencia from 18-26 June. This drama set in a boarding school in Anatolia also went home with the Audience Award from the international film festival organised by the Valencian Cultural Institute. The jury – made up of Rosanne Pel, Santiago Alverú, Alanté Kavaïté, Iulia Rugina and Nacho Ruipérez – particularly appreciated “its ability to cross borders thanks to its emotional journey bristling with criticism and a sense of humour”.

, which they both directed. Meanwhile, the Youth Jury Award for Best Feature was bestowed upon Ecstasy, a portrait of the experience of a young woman suffering from anorexia, by Brazil’s Moara Passoni, which also picked up the CIMA Award, handed out by the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media.

In the Official Short-film Section, the Moon of Valencia was conferred upon Rehearsal by Nigeria’s Michael Omonua. The jury, comprising Èrika Sánchez, Carlo Sironi and Diane Malherbe, stated that this comedy “undertakes a clever critique of those societies in which religion wields great power, which gives it a universal nature”. They also singled out Sestre, directed by Katarina Rešek, with a Special Mention.

On the other hand, the 15 members of the youth jury for short films opted to give the Best Short Film Award to Oh Black Hole by Renée Zhan. The Audience Award for Best Short Film was presented to Antonia by Alba Just.

In the Official Webseries Section, the prizes were distributed fairly evenly: the Moon of Valencia for Best Webseries was handed to Argentina’s 1 de esos días by Andy Gorostiaga, which can be seen on Instagram. Another Argentinian effort, Cross by Martin Vatenberg, took home the Audience Award for Best Webseries and also snagged a Special Mention for Best Cast, while The Communist’s Daughter by Leah Cameron pocketed the Youth Jury Award for Best Webseries, with extra Special Mentions for Best Cinematography and Best Score. The Special Mentions for Best Director and Best Editing were awarded to Australia’s Love, Guns & Level Ups, while the Special Mention for Best Production Design went to the team behind Dounia. Hitte by Martijn Winkler was deemed deserving of the Special Mention for Best Screenplay.

The Movistar+/ Pecera Estudio / Free Your Mind Short Film Project Award was granted to the screenplay for Se nos hizo de noche by Jorge Cantos: this title will open the next edition of Cinema Jove, in 2022. Lastly, the Feroz Award from the Association of Spanish Film Journalists was taken home by the Spanish short Dana by Lucía Forner.
