La vida que no es nuestra (lit. “The Life That Is Not Ours”), the second film by Israel González, following Fuel (2019), has a screenplay penned by the director himself, which tells the story of El Javi, a boy from the suburbs who, after a two-year stretch in prison, is released and resolves to change his life. By coincidence, he meets Laura, and a love affair blossoms between them. Caught in the middle of all this are the protagonist’s younger brother, Carlitos, a small-time crook with a certain reputation in his social circles (for being a troublemaker through-and-through), and their father José Manuel, a man who has given in to solitude and nostalgia, who will find himself at a crossroads, hurtling towards a hellish life on the streets.

by Daniel Monzón, films that, much like this one by González, rekindle the spirit of small-time crime flicks that were popularised in the 1970s and 1980s by Spanish filmmakers of the likes of José Antonio de la Loma, Eloy de la Iglesia and Carlos Saura (Deprisa deprisa).

The movie stars some unknown faces, such as Santos Adrián, Erika Bleda, Federico Celada, Jero García, Ramiro Alonso, Carmen García, Leire Martínez and Noa Lara. Filming took place in Alcorcón, Móstoles, Carabanchel, Caño Roto, Barrio La Uva, Hortaleza, Pan Bendito, Villaverde and other locations in the suburbs of Madrid.

“The shoot for La vida que no es nuestra has been a mind-blowing journey, in every sense of the word. It’s marked a milestone in my directorial career,” Israel González told Cineuropa. “We shot in neighbourhoods that are hard to reach, but whose residents threw themselves into the shoot and helped us out a great deal. We filmed in some unique locations, such as the Soto del Real prison, where they let a movie camera inside for the first time ever. We also had some high-profile cameos from the world of rap music, such as El Coleta, Costa, Gitano Antón, Wzhello, Carmona, Arce and Darmo. We had a high-end soundtrack courtesy of Frank Zannou (winner of a Goya Award for El truco del manco). Our cast of top-notch lead actors will give people plenty to talk about, especially the duo made up of Santos Adrián and Erika Bleda, among countless others. We had all of this on a COVID-era shoot – in other words, it was a real odyssey, but we had everything imaginable happen during filming: and when we say everything, it really was everything…” sums up González.

La vida que no es nuestra is the first project by independent production outfit Rumba Entertainment. According to its manager, Miguel Rueda, “We’re interested in genre films, quality ones, because our passion is to make good movies and keep the viewer entertained. We have a free spirit and we invest in talented people who want to make their project a reality.” Rueda studied Film, Architecture and Design in the USA. “I was born in Spain, but I trained professionally in the United States. That gives me a rather peculiar vision. They are two completely different countries, and I try to capture the best of both worlds,” he states. Nido Films is also involved in the production.
