Organised by Promperú (the government agency in charge of promoting tourism and foreign trade for Peru), the second Peruvian-Spanish Animation Co-production Meeting is unspooling online on 27 and 28 January (to register, please click here). The first iteration of this event took place last summer, also online, and served to forge alliances between Spanish firms from the animation sector and their Peruvian counterparts.

The objective of this new edition is fairly ambitious: to boost the competitiveness of the Spanish animation industry, fostering commercial relationships that will allow costs to be reduced through co-productions or strategic alliances with Peruvian companies that have international aspirations. For this reason, there will be face-to-face meetings, in virtual form and lasting 20-30 minutes, with the managers of the Peruvian companies selected – namely, Maneki Studio, Makaco, Apus, Alligator Entertainment, Trunche Films, Torre A, Plan B and Zeppelin.

Apus boasts a CV that includes titles such as the science-fiction feature Vigilados (in search of partners), the co-production with Brazil Nimuendaju, and the TV series Papelucho (with Chile) and Escuela 51, currently in development. Alligator Entertainment, founded in 2017, employs over 20 digital artists – headed up by Eduard Schuldt (Pirates in Callao) – and offers animation, virtual-reality and video-game services as well as other services related to digital technology, both for advertising and entertainment purposes. For its part, Makako offers everything from effects-based films to animated adverts, and from TV series to digital content. It can provide a complete post-production service, plus visual effects and composition, character animation and formatting of the end result, among other specialities.

Founded by brothers Jose, César and Sergio Zelada, Tunche Films has established itself as a hub for directors, technicians and visual effects artists, and its feature Ainbo is a co-production with the USA; in addition, in 2013, the team created Peru’s first film school, Epic. On the other hand, Torre A is the leading dubbing company in Peru: it began as a group of specialised voice actors and evolved into a firm providing a complete translation, recording, mixing and mastering service, with a particular prevalence of animated titles (Babi y Maiki and Rat &Tat are just some examples of the outfit’s work).

Founded in Lima in 2005, Plan B Animación devotes itself to providing corporate storytelling services, storyboard and character design, motion graphics and motion typography,2D and 3D character animation, 2D and 3D animation production, post-production and illustration, and has built up a huge customer base. Meanwhile, Zeppelin Creative Studio has spent ten years working with agencies and clients in both Lima and New York. Finally, Maneki Studio, specialising in 2D and 3D animation, partners with international agencies of the likes of McCANN, BBDO, Y&R, Ogilvy and Circus Grey, to name but a few. It has worked on series such as Los Charingolos, Little Angel and Ciudad Jardín, and it is now a one-stop shop, where clients can follow the entire process behind their projects, from start to finish. In addition, it is branching out to Chile and Spain.
