The European Film Market (EFM), part of the Berlinale, has announced that Dennis Ruh will be its new head, replacing outgoing EFM director Matthijs Wouter Knol. Ruh will officially take over his duties by 1 November, and starting from mid-September, he will work together with Wouter Knol, who is leaving the EFM to take on the position of director of the European Film Academy.

With a career in the film industry spanning over 12 years, Ruh was responsible for cooperating with international film festivals as department head at German Films, he has forged an international network of contacts, and he has become very familiar with the distribution business over the years. Berlinale directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian stated: “With Dennis Ruh, we have gained a well-connected industry expert to head up the EFM. We both see him as a committed and forward-thinking individual, and we’re looking forward to working together.”

In his initial comment, newly appointed EFM director Ruh underlined: “The EFM is very well positioned. It’s an integral part of the film business cycle and an important driving force for the industry. I want to continue its successful tack within this challenging market setting, and further expand strategic development and positioning. I’m looking forward to working constructively together with the experienced and competent EFM team.”

Furthermore, as has already been announced (see the news), the 2021 EFM will run from 11-18 February in a hybrid format. Therefore, in addition to the regular booths, screenings will still happen in the main cinemas and close to the market, while online screenings will also be added. It is expected that more online provisions and activities will be announced, while a five-day conference (12-16 February) will host the EFM Producers Hub, EFM Horizon, EFM Landmark, DocSalon, Berlinale Series Market and Berlinale Africa Hub for all market visitors, and provide an overview of the most important trendsetting innovations.

As is mentioned in the official announcement by the Berlinale, “The 2021 EFM hybrid model is an important step towards a growing digital presence.” More information and details of the full EFM programme will be announced in the coming weeks.
