Discerning film buffs rejoice! This summer, the Atlàntida Film Fest is celebrating ten years of successful editions. The festival headed up by Jaume Ripoll (see the interview) is marking the occasion with a selection of films that are just as fascinating as the ones featured at previous editions. Myriad European arthouse titles are among them and are sure to pique the audience’s interest. In fact, the gathering will pay tribute to Brit Stephen Frears, who will be in Palma de Mallorca to pick up his Masters of Cinema Award from actor Joseph Fiennes. The screenings will start shortly before that, with Destrucció creativa d’una ciutat, a documentary directed by Carles Bover, serving as the opening film, and the movies will continue showing on the Balearic island until 2 August. Audiences will be able to enjoy a meticulously assembled programme, made up of 42 titles, ten concerts and eight conferences.

However, between 27 July and 27 August, the festival – comprising 113 movies hailing from 25 countries, 53 of which are Spanish premieres – will also be available on the Filmin platform. As was the case in previous years, the tenth edition revolves around Europe and explores the challenges facing the continent. These include its historical memory, walls and borders, its identity and citizens’ right to privacy, which has been torn down completely by politics and the economy.

In this vein, the gathering will showcase, among many others, European features such as the German movie Merkel by Stephan Wagner, about the German chancellor (see the news); Surge [+leggi anche:

In addition to the film programme of this tenth edition, there will also be a focus on recent French cinema and various series: Sex by Danish director Amalie Næsby Fick, a story of adolescent love conditioned by social networks; Gender Derby by Camille Ducellier, about a team-based game created and practised by girls, which promotes physical diversity and transsexual inclusion; Force of Habit by various directors, which deconstructs power and how it is wielded invisibly over women, both in their private lives and in wider society; Vernon Subutex by Cathy Verney, one of France’s most successful series of late, in which Romain Duris breathes life into the owner of the legendary Revolver record shop, the nerve centre of the Parisian music scene in the 1990s; and Stieg Larsson – The Man Who Played With Fire by Henrik Georgsson, a documentary series about the best-selling author and his fight against the far right.

The closing ceremony of the festival in Palma will be held in Ses Voltes and will be entrusted to the movie Sempre dijous by Joan Porcel: it will be a very special event, as viewers will be witness to the shoot for the third act of the film, a portrait of one of the most talented emerging artists from the Balearics in recent years, Júlia Colom. At the end of the event, the singer will give one of the festival’s many tantalising concerts.
