The leading European writing residence for cinema and fiction for several years, the Groupe Ouest has decided, despite the current health crisis, to maintain the launch of its 2020 Annual Selection and to reveal the list of auteurs selected in the new promotion of the nine month residency. After wondering about the need to postpone the working sessions to another date, the Groupe Ouest chose to adapt itself to the needs of the story makers which the film industry will need more than ever tomorrow, opting to gather the auteurs via the Internet, finding the best digital platforms allowing the circulation of ideas.

Standing out from this 2020 Selection is Belgian filmmaker Lukas Dhont, whose feature debut, Girl [+leggi anche:

, won the Camera D’Or in Cannes in 2018 and a Best Actor award in the Un Certain Regard section. Now working on his second feature, Lukas Dhont has been selected by the Groupe Ouest with the project Angel, which he is co-writing with his usual collaborator Angelo Tijssens.

Also standing out is Malian filmmaker Daouda Coulibaly, revealed in Toronto in 2016 with his feature debut, the hard-hitting Wùlu [+leggi anche:

, and who is now writing (together with Nicolas Jounin) Paris 8.

Among the selected few are also the Franco-Polish filmmaker Jan Czarlewski, winner of the Golden Leopard and the Silver Leopard in 2011 and 2012 in Locarno with his short films L'Ambassadeur & moi and L'Amour Bègue before he worked on Polskie 100 lat, the biggest documentary of historical archive made in Poland since 1989. The director will be participating in Groupe Ouest’s writing laboratory with Welcome in North Korea, which he is co-writing with Carlotta Verny.

For the record, among the auteurs previously supported by the Annual Selection were Houda Benyamina and Romain Compingt with Divines [+leggi anche:

The 2020 Selection:

Quand viendra la fin du monde tu seras prête - Rémi Allier (feature debut)
When an incident in a nearby nuclear plant throws the region into panic, the ten-year-old Nina, a bright young girl who is a little isolated at school, is forced by her mother Lucie to stay in the evacuated area. With her mother and her little brother, Nina makes the strong and surprising experience of loneliness in an abandoned town where everything is allowed. Nina will do everything she can to meet her mother’s expectations and to help her with her idea for revenge…

Résistance - Jérémy Bernard, Guillaume Desjardins et Bastien Ughetto (first feature for the three members of the collective Les Parasites)
A Zone to Defend is about to be evacuated by the police. Inside, where an important number of people live defending their ideals, resistance is being organised. In a single take, the camera follows a mother / a brother who arrives from the outside to convince her son / his brother, an activist, that they should escape before it’s too late.

Paris 8 - Daouda Coulibaly, co-written with Nicolas Jounin
As part of their studies, sociology students in Paris 8, in Seine Saint-Denis, lead a field investigation in the rich neighbourhoods of Paris.

Welcome in North Korea - Jan Czarlewski, co-written with Carlotta Verny (feature debut)
While money is cruelly lacking at the North Korea Embassy in London, Thae, a brilliant diplomat, hires an intern, Claire, a graphic design student at the Saint Martins School of art & design, to create an ambitious propaganda exhibition with the aim of resolving financial problems. During the creation of this exhibition, Thae learns that his mission in England is reaching its end. He then begins to have doubts about the regime he’s always been defending.

Summer is coming. Leo (12 years old) is enjoying the last days of school with his schoolmates. Until the day a tragic event turns Leo’s world upside down.

L'Ours et l'Ermite - Delphine Maury, co-written with Marine Blin (animated – feature debut)
The bear is bored in the brambles and wants to make himself useful. But any time he helps an animal from the forest, his life turns to chaos… Meanwhile, the hermit has learned many things throughout his life and had many a thought. For fifteen years he has been waiting for a passionate and intelligent student he could transmit all his knowledge to… He offers a highly qualified class on a sign at the entrance of his part of the forest…

Le Géant dans l'Oursin - Jean-Claude Rozec (animated – feature debut)
Britanny, 1793. In order to free his father from the Republican jail, Pélagie, a young countess, learns magic and brings to life Guéor, a supernatural man with the ability to turn into a giant.

J'ai attrapé un esprit - Julien Silloray (feature debut)
18-year-old Boboy lives in a poor neighbourhood of Massabielle in Guadeloupe. With his girlfriend, he plans to leave the island to try his luck in France by joining an art glasswork class in Paris. But the sudden disappearance of his mother will throw his imminent departure into question.
