As the French government closed French cinemas on Saturday night (alongside other “non essential” public spaces in the country) to delay the propagation of the coronavirus, the CNC is preparing an action plan for the film industry to respond to the urgent situations faced by the professionals of the sector.

“The CNC will be by your side, at every moment, for as long as the crisis lasts. From its very beginning, the very essence of the CNC has been to support the entirety of the sector in this difficult context” said Dominique Boutonnat, president of the Centre National du Cinéma. Tasked by the Minister of Culture to first prepare a support plan, then one of economic recovery, the CNC will put in place measures of support and adapt their conditions as the situation evolves: “Of course, all the jobs of the sector (producers, technical industries, auteur artists, contract workers…) are touched by the pandemic, causing delayed shooting schedules for example, and risk to be increasingly so. The CNC will work together with all professionals to find ways to support them.”

Upcoming measures will naturally also be taken within a wider framework, in the same vein as the first decisions of general support to the economy announced last Thursday by the government: the State will finance short-time working, and companies’ social security contributions and taxes that were due in March are delayed without penalties.

It is worth noting that the CNC’s support commissions will continue to function in a dematerialised, online form.
