To showcase, promote and sell films so that they can been seen throughout the world. These are the goals of the 22nd Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris, taking place from 16-20 January 2020 and organised by UniFrance (read our interview with managing director Daniela Elstner), the agency for the promotion of French cinema abroad presided by Serge Toubiana.
This year, the event will welcome 389 international buyers (theatrical distributors, VOD and SVOD providers, TV broadcasters) and 30 exhibitors from 49 countries. 44 French sales companies will be negotiating sales for the 184 French films in their line-up, 57 of which will be having their market premiere at the Rendez-Vous. 120 French artists will be present for 115 foreign journalists from 32 countries, who will attend both the ceremony where the French Cinema Award will this year be handed to Olivier Assayas, as well as the launch of the 10th MyFrenchFilmFestival tomorrow (read the news).
Le Pacte will be pinning its hopes on the highly anticipated market premiere of Jean-Paul Salomé’s Mama Weed [+leggi anche:
scheda film], starring Isabelle Huppert in the lead role. The company will also be presenting films in post-production: Arthur Harari’s Onoda – 10 000 Nights in the Jungle and Gaël Lépingle’s Atomic Summer.
Pathé Films International will be showcasing three market premieres: Jan Kounen’s Mon cousin (starring Vincent Lindon and François Damiens - read the news), Éric Barbier’s Small Country: an African Childhood (read the news) and the comedy Meet The Malawas by James Huth. Worth mentioning, in post-production, is Martin Bourboulon’s Eiffel (read the news).
Indie Sales will be at the Rendez-Vous with five market premieres: Sophie Letourneur’s Enormous [+leggi anche:
scheda film] (starring Marina Foïs and selected in the Bright Future competition of the upcoming IFFR), Hugo Benamozig and David Caviglioli’s Welcome To The Jungle (with Vincent Dedienne and Catherine Deneuve in the leading roles - read the news), Olivier Babinet’s Fishlove (read the news), Benjamin Parent’s Man Up! scheda film] and Roy Arida’s Under The Concrete. And last but not least, in post-production, Bruno Dumont’s On a Half Clear Morning (read the news).
Playtime will unveil Caroline Vignal’s My Donkey, My Lover and I (read the news), but will also be negotiating on many other French titles in post-production from its line-up, such as François Ozon’s Summer of 85, Laurent Cantet’s Arthur Rambo (read the article) and Nine Antico’s Playlist (article).
Michel Hazanavicius’ The Lost Prince is heading StudioCanal’s slate. The company will be presenting two other market premieres: Jézabel Marques’ Sol [+leggi anche:
scheda film] and Michèle Laroque’s The Kids Are Back. Standing out among the titles currently in post-production are Anne Fontaine’s Night Shift [+leggi anche:
scheda film], Laurent Lafitte’s L'Origine du Monde (news), Yann Gozlan’s Black Box (article) and Cédric Jimenez’s BAC Nord (news).
Pyramide Films International will also present three market premieres, with the western Savage State [+leggi anche:
scheda film] from David Perrault, Grégory Magne’s Perfumes and Marion Lainé’s Into the World (article). Standing out in post-production are Danielle Arbid’s Simple Passion (news), Maxime Roy’s Les Héroïques (article) and Leyla Bouzid’s Une histoire d’amour et de désir (article).
Be for Films will also be attending, with five market premieres : Christophe Blanc’s Just Kids (article), Working Girls [+leggi anche:

scheda film] from Belgian filmmaker Frédéric Fonteyne, Aurélien Vernhes-Lermusiaux’s Towards The Battle, the Venitian title The End of Love [+leggi anche:
scheda film] by Keren Ben Rafael and the documentary Little Ballerinas by Anne-Claire Dolivet. Worth mentioning as well are Elie Wajeman’s Un médecin de nuit (which has almost wrapped filming – read the news) et Ève Deboise’s Petite leçon d’amour (currently filming – read the news).
SND will be pinning most of its hopes on Gabriel Le Bomin’s De Gaulle and Marc Fitoussi’s Appearances (starring Karin Viard in the lead role – read the news). But it will also be presenting three other market premieres: Benjamin Euvrard’s All Aboard!, Michaël Youn’s Divorce Club and Pascal Bourdiaux’s Toto.
Bac Films International will unveil the animated film Yakari, A Spectacular Journey from French director Xavier Giacometti and German director Toby Genkel, as well as Bernard Stora’s The Case (article). Standing out in post-production is Rachel Lang’s Mon Légionnaire (news).
Charades will be presenting Bruno Merle’s Felicità, as well as its films currently in post-production (Antoine Barraud’s Madeleine Collins – article, Laurent Tirard’s Le Discours – news, Pierre Pinaud’s La fine fleur - article) or wrapping filming (Chloé Mazlo’s Sous le ciel d’Alice – article).
Gaumont will be present with the market premiere of Philippe Guillard’s Pappy Sitter, but the company will also be negotiating pre-sales on films currently in post-production, such as Xavier Giannoli’s La Comédie Humaine (article) and Albert Dupontel’s Bye Bye Morons (news), or still filming (Nicolas Bedos’s OSS 117 : Alerte Rouge en Afrique Noire (article).
Although the company will not be presenting any market premieres, Kinology will be present with titles currently in post-production, such as Mia Hansen-Løve’s Bergman Island, Leos Carax’s Annette, Bertrand Mandico’s After Blue (article), Naël Marandin’s Les Dévorants (news), Mathias Malzieu’s A Mermaid in Paris (article), Peter Dourountzis’s Vaurien (news) and Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud’s Les Cobayes (article).
Wild Bunch will be starting pre-sales on Stéphane Brizé’s Pour le meilleur et pour le pire (news), and will continue them on its French titles currently in pre-production (Julia Ducournau’s Titane) and in post-production: Thierry de Peretti’s Les années 10 (article), Quentin Dupieux’s Mandibles (news – sales shared with WTFilms), Sylvie Verheyde’s Madame Claude (article), Just Philippot’s The Swarm (article) and Philippe Garrel’s The Salt of Tears [+leggi anche:
Elle Driver will be presenting the market premiere of the documentary In The Bottle from Favio Vinson, and will also be handling, in post-production, Emmanuel Mouret’s Les choses qu’on dit, les choses qu’on fait (article).
WTFilms will be especially busy, with the market premieres of Night Ride by Frédéric Farrucci (winner of the Best Director award in Saint-Jean-de-Luz), Lucky from Belgian director Olivier Van Hoofstadt, Sébastien Betbeder’s Up The Mountain [+leggi anche:

Other Angle Pictures will be presenting the market premieres of Ruben Alves’s Miss, Éric Besnard’s The Father Figure and La vérité si je mens ! Les débuts [+leggi anche:
scheda film] by Michel Munz and Gérard Biton. Its titles in post-production include Olivier Dahan’s Simone, une femme du siècle (article), Christopher Thompson’s Tendre et saignant (news) and Emmanuel Carrère’s Le Quai de Ouistreham (article).
mk2 Films will unveil the documentary Looking For Gilles Carion by Mariana Otero, SBS International will screen Pascal Bonitzer’s Spellbound and Wide will have the market premiere of Vanya Peirani-Vignes’ Blast.
It is worth noting that France TV Distribution will unveil the documentary Wolf Walk by Jean-Michel Bertrand, and that the company features, in post-production, Nicole Garcia’s Lisa Redler (article), Raphaël Jacoulot’s L’enfant rêvé (article) and Jean-Pierre Améris’ Profession du père (news).
Les Films du Losange will also be present at the 22nd Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris with, in production, Benoît Jacquot’s Suzanna Andler (article) and, in post-production, Nicolas Maury’s Garçon Chiffon (news) and Émilie Carpentier’s L’horizon (article).
Also ready for action are Totem Films (in particular with Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh’s Gagarine in post-production – article – and Jérémie Elkaim’s Assoiffés – news), Alpha Violet, Pulsar Content (with the project The Deep House by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, currently in pre-production), Capricci Films (with Vincent Le Port’s Bruno Reidal in post-production – article), Urban Distribution International (with the animated film Slocum by Jean-François Laguionie and Jungle rouge by Juan José Lozano and Zoltan Horvath, currently in production – article), Versatile (with the French-German-Portuguese co-production Apollo by Tarzan and Arab Nasser, currently filming, and Dominique Lienhard’s Naufrages, in post-production – article), the new entity Jour2Fête – Doc & Film, Coproduction Office, Celluloid Dreams, The Bureau Sales, Wide, Wide House, Loco Films and Iconisma, which will be showing the market premiere of its production, Jean Jacques’ Encre de Chine.
