by Bosnian filmmaker Ines Tanović.

This is the first time since 2012 that the festival is officially opening with a film playing in the Feature Film Competition. That year, another Bosnian female director, Aida Begić, bowed to the audiences at the 3,000-seat Open Air venue and the National Theatre with Children of Sarajevo [+leggi anche:

. However, Begić's film previously screened at Cannes, while The Son will be enjoying its world premiere at Sarajevo.

Meanwhile, the festival's popular non-competitive Kinoscope section has announced a new concept and its full programme. "The films at this edition question reality in different ways. For the first time this year, we will spread them across three distinctive programmes," say programmers Mathilde Henrot and Alessandro Raja. "Kinoscope Real questions everyday reality as it shapes our identities. What defines a person? If, from a very early age, the main element of identity is gender, it is important to question its rigid characterisation. Contemporary borders and those from the past must also be interrogated. Kinoscope invites stories that entertain, reflect, shock and engage the audience. From contemporary society to stories from the past, the films reflect on exacerbated individualism and its opposite – love. Kinoscope Surreal addresses our fantasies, revealing fears that sometimes exist more intensely in our imagination."
