, chosen as the closing film of this year’s edition. “Peter Jackson has made a ground-breaking documentary that really makes 100-year-old archive footage come to life. It’s a totally immersive experience!” enthuses head of programming Mickael Suominen. The screening will come ahead of the film’s local theatrical release just a few days later.

chosen as this year’s Finnish Gala screening after the film’s successful run at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlinale. “It marks the very first time that our Finnish Gala spot has gone to a documentary,” explains Mia Vainikainen, executive producer of the festival, to Cineuropa. “Hristov’s film is a deeply human story of a young woman and her journey from trauma to life and light.” Produced by Helsinki-based Making Movies, the film centres on a girl named Veera, who uses LARPing as a way to escape her many problems – including a childhood trauma she never really acknowledged.

Other significant propositions from the North include the Swedish science-fiction curio Aniara [+leggi anche:

 – a rather unique exploration of identity, sexual desire and wolf costumes. “With this film, at last, Trine Dyrholm convinces everybody that she is the true queen of Nordic actors. It’s a powerful and mind-blowing view of a very difficult and sensitive subject,” says Suominen, before moving onto X&Y: “This Swedish provocateur’s study on identity, sexuality and filmmaking with an all-star Nordic cast makes you ponder how a film can be structured and think about the fine line between fiction and reality.”

The very inclusive programme will also set aside some space for films from outside of Europe, as well as old favourites such as Michael Haneke’s Piano Teacher [+leggi anche:

. In partnership with the Loud Silents Festival, a silent-film concert will also take place, with Finnish musician Ringa Manner giving a brand-new spin to The Fall of the House of Usher, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s work and adapted for the screen by Jean Epstein and Luis Buñuel. “What I love the most is that Epstein and Buñuel got into a fight during filming, and he actually left the shoot!” jokes Otto Kylmälä, artistic director at Loud Silents. “When Epstein drove Buñuel back to Paris, he warned him: ‘Be careful; you are beginning to lean towards surrealism, and you should really avoid these people.’ During the history of film, there have been countless Poe adaptations. Corman and Švankmajer have put their respective efforts in, but Epstein’s is the first and a rare masterpiece. The accompaniment also makes all the difference because Ringa Manner is a force of nature. She has a beautifully primal way of using her vocals, which suits a film about madness.”

With its many initiatives, Espoo Ciné intends to provide options for viewers of all ages. “Our amazing children’s and youth film festival, Junior Ciné, is an empowering event for young audiences,” argues Mia Vainikainen, before adding that the parents certainly won’t be forgotten either. “You can always enjoy a glass of wine in between films in the cosy atmosphere of Kino Tapiola – our very own beautiful 1950s cinema.”

The 30th Espoo Ciné Film Festival will take place from 6-12 May 2019.
