The Netherlands' biggest short-film festival, the EFA-, Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying Go Short in Nijmegen, which took place from 3-7 April for the 11th time, announced its winners at the award ceremony in the festival's hub, Lux Cinema. Out of a total of 369 short films in the festival's rich programme, 133 took part in five competition sections for European, Dutch and student films, as well as VR and Music Videos.
The films awarded in the European Competition have a distinctly topical flavour and combine strong social messages, especially about the position and role of women in today's world, with innovative technical approaches. The Go Short Award for Best European Short Fiction Film went to Fuck You by Sweden's Anette Sidor. The 14-minute film tells a story about teenager Alice who steals a strap-on and challenges her boyfriend’s thoughts about girls.
The Best European Short Documentary Award went to Polish filmmaker Agata Baumgart's Love 404, about a girl on the edge of adulthood who finds an escape from the humdrum day-to-day on the internet. The Dutch-Belgian co-production Bloeistraat 11 by Nienke Deutz, a technically innovative and emotionally nuanced story of two girls growing up, picked up the Best European Short Animation Film award.
The Award for Best European Short Art Film went to Past Perfect by Portugal's Jorge Jácome. All of the European competition awards come with a financial prize of €1,000. Hard On by Sweden's Joanna Rytel, a provocative and unapologetically feministic film that mixes various techniques, including oversized puppets and masks, picked up the EFA nomination.
The European Competition jury consisted of German filmmaker Jonatan Schwenk, Sundance shorts programmer Lisa Ogdie, Dutch director Jasmijn Schrofer, Russian-Dutch artist-filmmaker Polina Medvedeva and Portuguese writer-director Jose Magro.
The VEVAM Go Short Award for Best Dutch Short Film, worth €2,500, went to Crow's Nest by Flynn von Kleist, while Polish director Natalia Konarz's documentary The Dam picked up the Encouragement Award for Best Student Short Film, worth €1,500.
