The story, penned by the director with his regular writing partner Gilles Marchand (nominated for the César Award for Best Screenplay in 2001 for Human Resources and With a Friend Like Harry), based on the novel of the same name by Colin Niel, begins with the disappearance of a woman. The day after a snowstorm, her car is discovered on a road leading up to a plateau where a handful of remote farms eke out a living. While the police have nothing to go on, five people are known to be linked to the disappearance. Each one harbours his or her own secret, but no one could have suspected that this whole affair began far away from this windswept wintry mountain, on an entirely different continent, where the searing sun burns bright and where poverty does not stop desire from laying down the law.

Produced by Carole ScottaCaroline BenjoBarbara Letellier and Simon Arnal for Haut et CourtSeules les bêtes is being co-produced by France 3 Cinéma and German outfit Razor Film Produktion. Having been pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature has also secured backing from Eurimages. The eight-week shoot will take place in France (in Sète and Florac) until 20 February, before continuing in Abidjan, where the final clapperboard will slam on 22 March. The French distribution will be handled by Haut et Court and the international sales by The Match Factory.
