Best Debut Film at Venice in 1980 with Ajándék ez a nap, in competition at the Mostra in 1986 with Idö van, showcased three times at Cannes (in Un Certain Regard in 1995 with A részleg and twice in the Directors’ Fortnight, with Time Stands Still in 1982 and with Letgohand Vaska (A Tale from the Labour Camp) in 1996), Best Director Award at Karlovy Vary in 1996 with Letgohand Vaska (A Tale from the Labour Camp), nominated for the European Film Award for Best Director in 2001 with Passport, and Grand Prix at the Hungarian Film Week in 2003 with his latest feature, Hungarian Beauty (a remake of American Beauty)… Petér Gothár’s filmography is by no means lacklustre, which makes his return to cinema (although he never abandoned the theatre) after a 15-year hiatus all the more thrilling.
