Presiding over the TIFF’s International Competition jury, Naderi was on hand to converse with young professionals from the film industry attending the training programme, looking to expand their experience and networking in the fields of international sales, marketing, distribution, presentation and programming.

Comparing cinema to a love affair that “sometimes makes you feel wonderful, while other times it hurts you”, the director stressed that he is still in love with film after more than 40 years. Though he made it clear that he did not come to the Locarno Industry Academy International to hand out a formula for success, nor to set any rules, he laid out his holy trinity of advice as “authenticity, consistency and appetite for learning”.

He praised the advantages of starting off with low-budget films, so as to minimise the damage of a film not doing well commercially, and admitted that today’s conditions in filmmaking are much harsher than they were a few decades ago, since back then, there were just five or ten film directors per country looking for funds and distribution, while now there are hundreds.

“Film directors dedicate 90% of their energy to looking for funding and 10% to the creative part, which for them is a source of great pressure,” Naderi noted. As he admitted, he feels the pressure himself as a jury member, since filmmakers have invested a large amount of their time and energy, while films are so numerous and the prizes so few.

“Learn as much as you can from other directors and always learn new things about your work: this will give you confidence,” Naderi urged the young film professionals, and went on to mention Fellini and Kiarostami as great influences, while also praising Theo Angelopoulos’ technical competence, and John Cassavetes’ sensitivity and love of humanity.

“Stay loyal to authenticity,” said Naderi over and over again, advising attendees to follow their own choices and not copy other people’s. “Authenticity is the ultimate criterion: with no authentic story, you are going to get lost, and so much money and energy will have gone to waste. Besides technique, cinema is communication coming from the heart. If you stay loyal to authenticity, you have more chances of finding an audience. And if the first film doesn’t go well, be patient and wait for the second or the third one. Cinema is like a marathon; it needs patience,” said the filmmaker, adding that learning is achieved from one’s mistakes, and not from making the right moves.

The Locarno Industry Academy International, a collaboration between the TIFF and the Locarno Film Festival, is a training programme created to help the young professionals of the cinema industry. The official “premiere” of the Locarno Industry Academy International in Southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean took place in Thessaloniki, as part of the TIFF’s Agora, offering attendees the chance to interact, share experiences and meet with key players in the international film industry, for discussions, case-study presentations and group workshops.
