Handed out at the 27th edition of the Cartoon Forum (a co-production platform dedicated to European animated series), which wraps today in Toulouse after a four-day flurry of intense activity, the 2016 Cartoon d’Or has been awarded to Yùl and the Snake by French director Gabriel Harel (Kazak Productions), which was selected after having snagged awards at the Cinanima (Espinho, Portugal) and Anim'est (Bucharest) festivals.

Each year serving to single out the best European animated short film, the prize’s other nominees for its 2016 edition were Alike by Daniel Martínez Lara and Rafa Cano Méndez (Spain), Danish production Machine by Sunit Parekh (Denmark), and French titles Peripheria by David Coquard-Dassault (produced by Autour de Minuit and Schmuby Productions) and Under Your Fingers by Marie-Christine Courtès (a Vivement Lundi! and Novanima production). The five finalists were selected from among 23 shorts that have won awards at European animation festivals partnered with Cartoon.

Meanwhile, Paris-based outfit Autour de Minuit had to make do with the Cartoon Tribute for "Producer of the Year". Besides Peripheria, the firm has BabiolesLa bûche de Noël (Cartoon d’Or 2014), Jean-Michel, Super Caribou and Non-Non under its belt.

British company Cake Entertainment received the 2016 Cartoon Tribute in the "Investor/Distributor" category, winning out over Penguin Random House (UK), Francetv Distribution, NeweN Distribution (France) and Studio 100 Media (Germany). Also, French channel M6 was victorious in the Broadcasters category, beating the likes of Latvian Television (Latvia), Nickelodeon International (UK/USA), RTÉ (Ireland) and Sveriges Television - SVT (Sweden).

Interestingly, this edition of Cartoon Forum set a new record, with 38 countries taking part and coming to check out the 80 hitherto unseen projects selected this year. In total, 950 producers, investors, distributors, buyers and representatives of SVoD platforms (including Netflix, Hopster TV and Toon Goggles) made the trip to Toulouse. For the record, since it was founded in 1990, Cartoon Forum has helped 680 animated series to secure funding totalling €2.3 billion.
