Cineuropa: What is your background and how did you become a producer?
Laura Hastings-Smith: I studied Fine Art – originally a painter, I gradually moved towards filmmaking. I lived in Sydney, Australia for a couple of years, where I taught filmmaking part-time at an art school while also working as an artist-in-residence at a hospital, with teenagers. While in Australia, I fell in love with cinema and returned to the UK, determined to direct feature films. However, success came as a director of documentaries for broadcast on Channel 4 and the BBC!

Because of my background and the fact that I’m also an organised person I began to be invited to produce director’s work that didn’t quite fit into a particular box, that mixed genres, etc. This led to me working with two highly creative people – Jefferson Hack and Rankin, founders of Dazed & Confused magazine – and culminated in my producing the feature film The Lives of the Saints. I have produced a hugely wide-ranging set of projects but I feel my career as a producer of feature films is going to be the most challenging and the most fulfilling.

What is the production philosophy of your production company?
Right now, I’m enjoying working as a freelance producer.

How do you choose projects? What qualities must a project have to catch your attention?
I look to work on cinematic projects that I think matter; films that both entertain and inspire. I like having the freedom to choose not only the project but the team that I work with – talent, vision, communication and collaboration are all key qualities I look for.

Do you have international perspectives involving co-producing with other European countries?
I think that if you concentrate on conveying what is at the heart of the human story in your film, and you find the best cinematic way of communicating whatever your characters’ emotions and dilemmas are then you are well on the way to creating a film of international relevance. Correspondingly, intelligent cross-borders casting, locations, crewing and co-producing partners all help to make the project truly international. I think that’s answered your question?

With which countries do you co-produce the most?
I look forward to expanding my contacts and entering into co-productions in the future.

How do you feel about being selected as a Producer on the Move 2008?
I feel very honoured and fortunate. This is a great platform for people in the industry to get to know me and for me to meet other like-minded professionals and potential future partners.
