With the success of the first Shooting Locations Marketplace, held last autumn, its organisers hope that the second edition (20-21 October; read more) will be even more successful. To discuss it, we spoke to Silvia Martínez, business development manager at the Valladolid Trade Fair Centre.

Cineuropa: How are you approaching this second edition: without the nerves of the first and with the confidence that comes with experience?
Silvia Martínez:
Yes, especially because we have quite good data from the first edition. So, we are approaching a second year with many location managers and producers who have confirmed their participation: about 60, from eight different countries. The most important for us are Great Britain and the United States, but they are also from Canada, Malta, Portugal, Morocco and Germany. Norway is the big new addition this year, however, we hope to be able to tell you more about it soon. Shooting Locations Marketplace is much more than just attracting shoots for Spain: its strength lies in the fact that it is an international market, with a strong presence of Mediterranean and European countries. Our focus is on the industrial and professional aspect.

How does an audiovisual location manager participate?
The first step is to contact us, and we will ask you about the work you’ve done, which production companies you’ve worked with, what type of location manager you are (television, film, etc.) and what projects you’re currently working on. We want to know if the locations that are going to be participating are of interest to you: that your participation as a location manager is interesting both for you and for the participating destinations.

How do locations wanting to attend register?
The first step is the same: get in touch with us. There are two profiles: those who belong to the Spain Film Commission and they tell us what they need, and then, on the other hand, there are private companies such as Paradores and hotel chains that want to show location managers their available spaces. And then there are film service companies, which are very important for both the location and the location manager, as they are able to have a good shoot, with all needs covered.

This market is a bit of a matchmaker, as it brings together two entities that want to get along and have a long relationship, because the production of a film takes a long time. Why are locations so important?
They are not only for the film and audiovisual sector, but also to make the location known to the film-viewing public. That's why it's so important to convince the location manager about what their ideal location is and why you want to meet them; and when the location manager gives a match, that's when you've made them fall in love.

Which location managers have already confirmed their attendance at the October event in Valladolid?
Lori Balton, for example, who is like an ambassador for the project, telling everyone about it with great affection; as well as Dan Connolly, Peter Gray, Scott Trimble, Chris Baugh and Bill Darby. Anyone who knows the Shooting Locations Marketplace comes back: it is an event that professionals have loved.

So what makes this event so special?
We’ve managed to create a working space where both locations and location managers and producers feel very comfortable, something that was unthinkable until now.

Valladolid is establishing itself as a film city: not only does it hold the long-standing Seminci, but its City Council has also applied to hold the Goya Awards 2023 (which will go to Seville in the end) and the second edition of the Shooting Locations Marketplace will soon take place there.
For us, the work being done by the Valladolid Film Commission, through Juan Manuel Guimeráns, who is part of the Spain Film Commission, is very important, and this really helps us to develop and improve this project. Also, Valladolid, only one hour by train from Madrid, is an easy, quiet and nearby city, where other events also fall near those dates, with the Seminci taking place right after our event. We therefore ask all those unique locations and film service companies that would like to become more widely known to get in touch: tell us about your situation and how you would like to participate, and we will be more than happy to help.
