has been doing the rounds of festivals across the world and will be presented in the Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! section at the upcoming Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

Cineuropa: Why do you make films?
Micha Lewinsky: I make films because I like going to the cinema. It’s a place where you can feel really moved. I’m always surprised that I’m able to go into a movie theatre for an hour and a half and cry – which is something I do very rarely in the outside world. It’s a strange and unique experience.

Where did the idea for the film come from?
I got married two years ago. When I saw the civil registrar, I thought to myself it’s a really peculiar job, where above all you mustn’t fall in love in the workplace.

The first scene of the film is quite mysterious, a musician seen from behind, standing on a stage, looks out at an empty auditorium. In the last scene, the two main characters perform before an ecstatic audience. What is the meaning of these two scenes?
The scene at the beginning corresponds to the female character’s dream. She’s thinking about the male character whilst sleeping: in the next frame, she gets up. Whilst at the end of the film, she’s with him on stage, at the start they’re both alone, in their own way. This has a meaning, and yet it wasn’t intended!

We shot the last scene of the film two weeks before starting the shoot proper because we had the opportunity to go to an open-air concert. And I thought it would make a beautiful final scene. The first scene was shot last because the film was too short, we needed to add one and a half minutes! In the end, I wanted the main character and music to be there right from the start, as a taste of what follows.

Your two latest films have earned awards for the lead actors. How do you work with the actors?
I hire very talented actors! They ask the right questions about the characters. I just have to answer them! And then I do rehearsals for each scene so that we’re all prepared when we arrive on set. But I try to choose the right actors for the right roles!

What do you expect from your selection in “Variety Critics’ Choice” at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival?
It’s an honour! Karlovy Vary is a major festival, good for selling films. I’m also attracted to co-productions. Switzerland is too small for making films without any support. And I’ll be glad to meet the other directors from across Europe, who have also been selected. It’s an opportunity for exchange and making contact.

What are your forthcoming projects?
I’m working on an adaptation of a novel with a German production company.
