Presentation and Philosophy:

The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) is a state university with a long tradition. It was founded more than 125 years ago. Today MOME is a university of higher education that strives for communication in the fields of space, object and media. To achieve this, the university needs to approach art as an interdisciplinary field.

The three-cycle study structure (BA/MA/DLA) provides adequate flexibility and mobility for its students. MOME’s definite ambition is to further broaden its international relations. It welcomes every professional co-operation which inspires its educational and artistic work.

The professional education of animation “designer-artists” started in 1980 at MOME. Both traditional animation techniques (puppet animation, hand-drawn animation) and animation methods applied in new media (interactive applications, digital animation) play important roles in MOME’s educational programme. These modular programmes consist of practical tasks that build upon each other, in which creative practice is paramount. Students solve tasks by taking on the roles of a director or a “head designer“. Such tasks range from developing the creative concept to overcoming obstacles of execution. During their studies students have the opportunity to produce their own content such as animated shorts, TV specials, commissioned animations, interactive applications, games, communication tools and other genres.

Number of students in film/animation studies: 60

Number of international students: around 30 at the Media Institute

Number of teachers: 6 full-time, 7 guest lecturers in the Animation department

Degree category / length of studies:

BA in Animation: 3 years (6 semesters)

MA in Animation: 2 years (4 semesters)

Course content and structure:

BA in Animation: The aim of the Animation BA programme is to train animation designers who are capable of working as animators, production designers, compositors in animation film production as well as any motion picture, television and communication projects applying animation. Graduates are able to participate in the development of video and computer games and animated applications on the internet by carrying out tasks on their own or in a team. Throughout their training, students take part in solo and team projects to learn the fundamental skills of developing movement, animation production design (background and character design) and animated content. They get acquainted with the application of various animation techniques and thus are able to do design and animation works.

Besides meeting the requirements for basic “artistic” education, the BA programme provides an opportunity to acquire the professional, technical and production expertise needed for the creation of animated content, and for the design of animation genres used in current media (including television, internet, mobile devices, etc.).

The BA programme is modular. It consists of practical tasks from the Animation main courses, which build on each other, and where design practices are paramount. Students solve tasks by taking on the role of “head designer”. This ranges from working out the creative concept to solving the problems of execution.

The specific knowledge required for this execution is given to the students through various courses such as Visual Studies, Analytical Drawing, Animation Movement, Digital Technique, Sound Design, Typography, Shooting Course, Puppet Design and theoretical courses such as Dramaturgy, Animation History and Contemporary Visual Communication.

Digital techniques help in acquiring the technical procedures required for the execution of work with digital tools. This includes a digital work procedure going from editing through to post-production and 3D animation. Sound Design provides the platform for understanding the system in relation to sound-music-picture-time-story. It gives practical knowledge on the demands in scoring a production, including recording, editing and other aspects of monologue, dialogue and music.

MA in Animation: The objective of the MA programme in Animation is to train animation artists, directors, designers. Graduates from the training programme are capable of developing animated content, films, series, may act as creative producers of motion picture, communication and interactive applications using animation. Their skills, knowledge and experience obtained during the course make students competent in selecting and managing professionals (figure designers, animators, set designers, etc.) for diverse productions as well as in directing and managing creative pre-production and production-related processes. During the four semesters of the MA programme students develop animation projects through which they obtain essential filming and animating skills for designing and creating animated art objects.

The first year of the education programme focuses on contemporary animation cinematography. Contemporary genres are introduced and the basic knowledge of directing and conceptual development is taught, both requiring independent creative and design approaches.

The second year of the MA programme is the production of a diploma work, which is created and finalized in the last two semesters and whose genre, technique and theme are completely optional.

The MA in Animation programme is based on different courses: Animation Concept Development, Animation Production Development, Animation Project 1-2, Genres of Animation, Sound Design, Animation Design, Media Production Studies and Digital Techniques.

Subjects for degree works: Animated Shorts; Animated series pilots; Animated Apps; Web-based animated content, etc.

Entry requirements:

MA: The entrance examination consists of a portfolio, cover letter and interview.

BA: The entrance examination consists of an aptitude test, practical examination on different levels and an interview.
