The awards ceremony of the 56th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival turned out to be an evening that celebrated young domestic cinema. Admittedly, the Crystal Globe for Best Film went to a Canadian-Iranian social drama, Summer with Hope, the sophomore feature by Sadaf Foroughi, while Jonás Trueba’s musings on life centring on two couples, You Have to Come and See It [+lire aussi :

, won the Special Jury Prize. However, the latest crop of Czech films by the young generation stole the limelight.

Beata Parkanová won the Best Director Award for her sophomore feature, and the second instalment in her trilogy, The Word [+lire aussi :

, an amusing look at the entrance exams for art school by the pair of documentarians Adéla Komrzý and Tomáš Bojar. Art Talent Show was also crowned by the FIPRESCI jury as the Best Film in the Proxima Competition, and Tomasz Wiński’s feature debut, Borders of Love [+lire aussi :

, another Czech flick, picked up the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film in the Crystal Globe Competition. Furthermore, the festival visitors voted for the domestic rap documentary PSH Neverending Story by Štěpán FOK Vodrážka as the winner of the Audience Award.

The Best Actress Award was shared by Takia Mumladze and Mariam Khundadze for their roles as the protagonists of Ioseb ‘Soso’ Bliadze’s drama A Room of My Own [+lire aussi :

, about Millennials in contemporary Tbilisi, a film that also touches on the influence of patriarchal thinking on Georgian society. The feature-length debut by the directorial duo comprising David Kapac and Andrija Mardešić, The Uncle [+lire aussi :

, did not go unnoticed either, as the thriller with farcical elements earned a Special Jury Mention from the Proxima jury.

The industry awards in KVIFF Eastern Promises were announced earlier (see the news). This year’s edition of the festival organised a total of 453 film screenings, and a total of 121,015 tickets were sold. 170 films were screened, including 108 feature-length fiction films, 24 feature-length documentaries and 38 shorts. 35 movies had their world premieres, while six had their international premieres and four their European premieres. The 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will be held from 30 June-8 July 2023.
