The Göteborg Film Festival has announced that it is starting up a residency programme for Ukrainian filmmakers, following its extended support for Ukrainian cinema in 2021 via the Göteborg Film Fund. In cooperation with the University of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland, the Göteborg Film Fund 2022 is now opening the call for applications for three residencies with a duration of three months each.

“We hope that our residencies can give at least a few filmmakers the opportunity to continue their work in a peaceful environment, whether they want to develop scripts or new projects, or finish existing ones. Since we already had a strong connection to the Ukrainian film community, we are happy to be able to provide this possibility for Ukrainian filmmakers to keep working from Sweden, until they can do so at home again,” says fund manager Camilla Larsson.

“Solidarity with the Ukrainian people is widely expressed in Sweden. We are happy to provide facilities for the artists and filmmakers to continue their important creative work and cultural expression. I am also convinced that they will contribute to the creative development in West Sweden,” says Conny Brännberg, regional councillor of Region Västra Götaland.

The Göteborg Film Fund is an initiative of the Göteborg Film Festival aimed at supporting films and filmmakers in regions where making cinema is difficult, owing to economic or political reasons. During 2021, Ukraine was one of the four countries where the Göteborg Film Fund was active, and it selected eight Ukrainian projects for development and post-production support. Moreover, four Ukrainian producers selected for support from the Göteborg Film Fund – Denis Ivanov, Sashko Chubko, Darya Bassel and Natalia Libet – will attend the Ukrainian focus at the Marché du Film (17-25 May – see the news).

The three residencies consist of a three-month stay in Gothenburg, including a flat (with room for family members if needed), a per diem of SEK 10,000 (€945) per month, travel costs to and from Gothenburg, workspace at the offices of the Göteborg Film Festival, and an introduction to different industry networks in the region.

The residencies are open from June to August 2022, although the dates can be adjusted if needed. The call is open to feature-length fiction or feature-length documentary projects, at any stage of production, made by Ukrainian filmmakers (directors, producers, screenwriters, editors and so on). The residencies are being organised with financing from Region Västra Götaland and in cooperation with HDK-Valand at the University of Gothenburg.

The instructions for applying are as follows:

The application should contain:

  • A short description of the project you would like to work on during the residency;
  • The filmmaker’s CV (can be director, scriptwriter, producer, editor and so on);
  • A personal covering letter.

Applications should be sent to: application.fund@goteborgfilmfestival.se. The selection will be made on an ongoing basis.
