It was a big night for streamers at the BAFTAs. Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog [+lire aussi :

won Best Film and Best Director, while Jeymes Samuel won Outstanding Debut for a British Writer, Director or Producer for his western The Harder They Fall, both of which were produced and financed by Netflix. As for Apple+, the streamer was able to celebrate two prizes for CODA (Best Adapted Screenplay for Siân Heder and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur), which the company best known for producing laptops bought after it debuted at Sundance last year.

The big surprises came in the acting categories, where all four of the winners were first-time victors at the BAFTAs. Will Smith was awarded Best Actor for his turn as tennis dad Richard Williams in King Richard. But perhaps the biggest eyebrow raiser of the night came when Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for her turn as a Muslim convert in Aleem Khan’s After Love [+lire aussi :

Kenneth Branagh’s hotly tipped Belfast [+lire aussi :

had to make do with Outstanding British Film, whereas Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car won Best Film Not in the English Language. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune [+lire aussi :

, on the other hand, a vast co-production between the USA, Hungary, Jordan, the UAE, Norway and Canada, walked away with a healthy batch of five gongs: Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer; Best Cinematography for Greig Fraser; Best Production Design for Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos; Best Sound for Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Doug Hemphill, Theo Green and Ron Bartlett; and Best Special Visual Effects for Brian Connor, Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles and Gerd Nefzer.
