, which received the CICAE Award in the Forum sidebar at the 2016 Berlinale, Grigore goes back to exploring a complicated family relationship with the story of Irina (Ioana Chiţu), a young woman from rural Romania who dreams about leaving her dysfunctional family and going to study in Bucharest. During a party, Irina has an ambiguous sexual experience with an artist, an encounter that will prompt her to face her family, tempting her male relatives, especially her older cousin Liviu (Mircea Postelnicu), into a psychological game.

Blue Moon is an independent production, made with no funds at all from the Romanian National Film Center. It was produced by Gabriela Suciu for InLight Center, in co-production with Romanian outfits Atelier de Film, Forest Film, Smart Sound Studios and Avanpost. The film participated in various development programmes – for example, the FEST - Pitching Forum Workshop in Portugal, Plot – Professional Script Lab and LIM – Less Is More – and the co-production markets HAF Hong Kong, Berlinale Co-Production Market and FEST - Pitching Forum.

Ioana Flora, Vlad Ivanov, Emil Măndănac, Mircea Silaghi, Ilinca Neacşu and Robi Urs play supporting characters in the movie.

“The film does not provide solutions to the vicious circle of aggression. I think it is more of a discourse of revenge, of decompression. It does not touch at all on the possibility of escaping the victim mentality, but rather seeks to provide a certain experience of Irina’s emotions. In order to be able to accurately present these emotions, I often chose, in the editing, to give up on the logical course of the story and make it relevant for the audience from the perspective of a very intimate experience,” the director says in the film’s press kit.

Blue Moon is represented by German world sales agent Patra Spanou Film. The domestic release is scheduled for 5 November, and Follow Art Distribution is the film’s Romanian distributor.
