The 9th edition of the Baltic Pitching Forum (BPF), one of the leading film industry events in the Baltic region, will take place in Vilnius from 7-9 October. The forum will invite selected participants and industry professionals from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, alongside Sweden, this year’s guest country, to showcase their best filmmaking talents.

The selected participants will receive personal consultation sessions on their screenplays and take part in a pitching master class as well as lectures on film sales and communication. They will also pitch their shorts to a panel of industry experts, who will give a number of awards to selected projects.

The BPF Panel will award two short film projects from the Baltic republics with participant rights to the European short film co-production forum Euro Connection (as part of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival) and the Torino Short Film Market and its pitching session “You Only Pitch Twice.” Meanwhile, the Baltic Producers’ Jury, consisting of three experienced professionals from the region, will select the Best Short Film Project and award it with the Baltic Producers MEDIA Award, a €1000 cash prize.

On this occasion, Estonia will be represented by animated flick Schrödinger (directed by Sergei Kibus and produced by Kadriann Kibus) and the fiction projects of two BPF alumni, namely Oskar Lehemaa’s Buddy Horror and Anna HintsWeight of Light (produced by Evelin Penttilä and Johanna Maria Paulson).

From Latvia, the event will host a BPF alumni animation project in A Thread (directed by Kristina Tverdohleba and produced by Thom Palmen), and two fiction projects titled A Crack (helmed by Ieva Norvele and produced by Aija Bērziņa) and Big Loop - Small Loop (directed by Žanete Skarule, produced by Alise Rogule and developed during the Baltic Shorts Residency).

Lithuania will be represented by fiction films Isolation (directed by Ieva Veiverytė, produced by Justė Michailinaitė) and Reminiscence (directed by Kristijonas Dirsė and produced by Liucina Mackialo) along with animated flick Champion (directed by Tomas Mitkus and produced by Vaida Nedzinskaitė-Mitkė).

Finally, Sweden will present three short fiction projects: 22 Hours by Peter Altman (produced by Viktor Axberg), Anise Underground by John Paul Bichard (produced by Felicia Bichard) and Yellow Grass, directed and produced Linn Markussen.

You can find out more about the selected projects here: https://bpf.lt/bpf-2021/projects/

Selection criteria included the projects’ potential for co-production, its relevance for international audiences and the level of support provided by the production companies. The selection committee took into account the creators’ style and experience as well as their commitment in championing new points of view.

Speaking to Cineuropa, the head of the Baltic Pitching Forum and Lithuanian Shorts Rimantė Daugėlaitė-Cegelskienė said: “We care about helping get these projects off the ground and our aim is for these films to get more funding and find new production opportunities. […] The BPF helps us take the pulse of young and upcoming filmmakers in the industry, as we discover what they are currently working on and what topics are prevalent. As the mode of production of shorts means that they can often be more immediate, the BPF always gives a sense of freshness and excitement as we can often spot the trends and talents who will be making a mark on the feature world in the future.”

While the 9th BPF will be a live event, last year’s virtual format opened up more opportunities for people to attend. As such, part of the programme, including pitching sessions, will be available to industry professionals around the world. More information on the panellists and lectures will be available in mid-September.

The Baltic Pitching Forum is organised by Lithuanian Shorts in partnership with  the Riga International Film Festival, Riga International Short Film Festival 2ANNAS, PÖFF Shorts (at the Tallinn International Film Festival Black Nights) and Estonian Short Film Center ShortEst. It is supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture, the Lithuanian Film Centre, the Sweden-Lithuania Cooperation Fund and the Audiovisual Works Copyright Association “AVAKA”. Other partners include the Nordisk Panorama Market, the Uppsala Short Film Festival, the Swedish Film Institute, and the Creative Europe – MEDIA desk offices in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
