a few days ago. It stars first-time actresses África de la Cruz and Paula Díaz, who respectively breathe life into the characters of Ana and Corrales, two 17-year-old girls who pour every aspect of their lives onto social networks, where reality and fantasy often blur and intermingle. The cast is rounded off by Beatriz CotobalOlga NavalónLola BueroTeresa CruzRafa Vera and Alva Inger. The actors were chosen through a casting session that saw more than 200 hopefuls take part, because in his own words, the director was looking to make “a hyperrealistic film, branded similar to YouTube, albeit at times steeped in that pop, or even arty, feel that’s par for the course on Instagram or TikTok”.

Amodeo also stated, “Notwithstanding the strict protocols, which were actually quite logical, given the circumstances, the shoot went pretty smoothly and was even a joyful experience in a way, as strange as that may sound, because of the topic of the movie and because of the catastrophic times we are living through.” The man behind The Pilgrim Factor (together with Alberto Rodríguez) and Astronauts, as well as the more recent titles ¿Quién mató a Bambi? [+lire aussi :

, believes that The Gentiles is “my most uninhibited film, artistically speaking. And it’s free of COVID-19 as well, which is no mean feat in times like these.”

), used Super 16mm to film a story in which we see how Ana pours the contents of her entire life onto Instagram and other social networks, where she posts photos, videos and short animations accompanied by scathing (and sublime) texts. The girl is going through quite a strange period in her life: besides family conflict and identity issues that are only to be expected at her age, something else has cropped up recently, as she has started feeling something she doesn’t quite understand for Corrales, whom she has adored ever since the moment she met her. Dragged along by her mate, she and various schoolfriends have come into contact with teenagers drawn to suicide. For them, it’s like a game – just a bit of transgressive entertainment.

“A few years ago, some Welsh teenagers who had hooked up via the internet committed suicide in a short space of time, all in the same manner. Apparently, they were just normal kids, judging by the photos and comments that they posted on their pages, apart from the fact that suicide cropped up too frequently in their chats,” Amodeo notes. “My idea with The Gentiles is to make something akin to Bridget Jones’s Diary meets The Virgin Suicides.

The Gentiles is being produced by Las Gentiles Película IAE, with the involvement of Canal Sur and with funding coming from the Andalusian regional government. Its distribution will be handled by Alfa Pictures, and it is slated for release in autumn this year.
