Croatian multiplex cinemas are set to reopen today (20 August) with safety measures in place: an empty seat on each side of an occupied one, and longer breaks between screenings to avoid crowds in lobbies.

Over half of the theatres in the Independent Cinema Network (ICN) have been working since May, using the warm weather for open-air screenings, and it is expected that most of them will be getting back into operation in the coming weeks.

On this occasion and in order to help cinemas attract moviegoers in a less-than-ideal epidemiological situation (COVID-19 figures in the country are on the rise following the relaxation of measures introduced for the touristic season), the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC) is launching the promotional campaign entitled "Back to the Movies!"

In September, ICN theatres will be screening historically popular Croatian films from the 1970s and 1980s, but also more recent local hits such as Vlatka Vorkapić's Sonja and the Bull [+lire aussi :

. Multiplexes will join the campaign on 25 August only, with one-off screenings of these three titles.

The profits from the tickets will be directed towards the restoration of legendary Croatian filmmaker Dušan Vukotić's forgotten gem The Seventh Continent.

In addition, filmmaker and former HAVC director Hrvoje Hribar has made six promotional videos, trailers of a sort, which repurpose scenes from classic Croatian films, such as the 1981 sci-fi movie Visitors from the Arkana Galaxy, also directed by Vukotić, as well as recent genre titles like My Grandpa Is an Alien [+lire aussi :

or The Show Must Go On, into humorous, virus-related "micro-movies". You can see these in HAVC's YouTube channel.
