Piers Wenger, controller of BBC Drama, and Charlotte Moore, director of BBC Content, have commissioned writers Harry and Jack Williams’ (the TV series Baptiste, The Missing and Liar) brand-new thriller series, entitled The Tourist, for BBC One. The enigmatic plot is as follows: in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, a British man is pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road. An epic cat-and-mouse chase unfolds, and the man later wakes up in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive. Except he has no idea who he is. With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, the man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback.

Lisa Scott (the TV series The Hunting and Pine Gap) will produce the project, whilst Chris Sweeney is set to direct. The helmer’s recent credits include the TV series Back to Life (2019), starring Daisy Haggard and Geraldine James in the lead roles, and two episodes of the crime-drama Liar (2017). This new 6x60 series will be rich in shocking, surprising and brutal twists and turns, and will be set in a world populated by quirky, enigmatic characters, where offbeat black comedy mingles with high-stakes action. The mystery-thriller snakes through the dusty outback of Australia, to the frantic noise and blinding lights of Singapore, and then to the calm, luxurious, white beaches of Bali.

Speaking about their new project, writing duo Harry and Jack Williams said: “The Tourist is a departure from anything we’ve written before. It isn’t an easy show to categorise – so we won’t. We are, however, hugely excited to have Chris Sweeney on board as director, and to be making this for the BBC. We’re thankful for their support on this ambitious project.” Moreover, Piers Wenger, controller of BBC Drama, seems very hopeful about the series: “The Tourist has one of the boldest and most brain-twistingly brilliant conceits that thriller fans will have experienced in a long time. We are delighted to be home to this inspired and utterly original idea, and can’t wait to see how Jack, Harry and the exciting team at Two Brothers will bring it to life.” Filming will begin later this year, and the cast will be announced in due course.

The Tourist is being produced by the UK’s Two Brothers Pictures (an all3media company) for the BBC, in association with Highview Productions, all3media International, the South Australian Film Corporation and Stan. Harry and Jack Williams will also serve as executive producers, alongside Christopher Aird and Chris Sweeney for Two Brothers Pictures, and Tommy Bulfin for the BBC. International sales are entrusted to all3media International.
