The script, penned by the director himself, is based on Martin Bengtsson’s 2007 autobiographical novel In the Shadow of San Siro. The story revolves around Bengtsson’s experience as a 17-year-old football wonderkid, freshly recruited by Inter Milan, whose dream turned into a nightmare when he started suffering from depression and tried to commit suicide.

Speaking about the plot to Nordisk Film & TV Fond, veteran producer Piodor Gustafsson explained: “The film is really about a young man – Martin – who discovers things about himself and is transformed. Football is just an arena to tell this coming-of-age story. But the film does raise the problem of mental illness within the high-pressure, money-driven world of professional football, which affects about 30% of the top players in the world.”

The project is also being backed by the Swedish Film Institute, the Danish Film Institute and the Torino Film Commission, among other institutions. Paris-based sales agent Wild Bunch will handle international sales outside of the Nordic countries, whilst Stockholm-based firm TriArt is in charge of its Swedish release, slated for October 2020.
