As the 2019 edition of MIDPOINT TV Launch is ready to wrap during the upcoming CineLink Drama co-financing forum — held during the Sarajevo Film Festival (16-23 August) — the leading training and networking platform focusing on series development since 2015 is investing more on the field and introduces a new TV writing-focused programme: Writers’ Room.

As was announced a couple months ago, MIDPOINT Writers’ Room will act as a sidebar module to the main TV Launch, and will offer practical training on how to organise a writers’ room. Running for four days (2-7 November) in Prague, the workshop will feature lectures, plotting and writing training, along with a simulation of an actual writers’ room, while two different perspectives, both the American and the European, will be showcased.

Regarding the expectations of the programme, workshop tutor, Hungarian creative executive and MIDPOINT TV Launch Head of Studies Gabor Krigler mentioned: “The key to the success of a TV drama, a lot more often than not, is collaboration. It is imperative that all the key contributors see the same show in their head, share the same vision and weave the story in one unified voice. Writers and producers — and that rare breed in Europe, the writer-producer — can all benefit from our new intensive module, where we simulate the work within the oft talked about Writers’ Room and show the participants how to achieve the optimum level of creative collaboration while everybody still feels ownership of the end product. In Europe, there are still a lot of myths and misconceptions about the role and identity of the showrunner and the work in the writers’ room. Our aim is to demystify the process and show it for what it is: a forum for articulating the common artistic goal and working harmoniously together to create the best product possible.”

American executive producer and consultant Maggie Murphy, the fellow tutor who will conduct the Writers’ Room and offer the US perspective of the experience, also added: “We are providing the structure and tools needed to discover and create a foundation for a viable and sellable TV series.” The submission period has already opened and more information can be found here, while the deadline for the inaugural session is 13 September 2019.

Furthermore, the 2020 edition of MIDPOINT TV Launch will initiate a new partnership with Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, which will host the third and final workshop of the programme in November 2020 with the title “Season Finale”.

Marge Liiske, head of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, commented on the partnership: “We are thrilled that MIDPOINT, one of the leading training organizations in Europe, is bringing the finale of their TV Launch programme to Tallinn. As film and TV production and content are ever converging, it makes sense for classical film and co-production markets to also support the development and production of series.”

On MIDPOINT’s behalf, Katarina Tomkova, TV Launch programme coordinator, added: "TV Launch is happy to extent its partners to another of its primary territories of focus, and to announce a collaboration with the established industry event of Baltic Event based in Tallinn, Estonia, which with great results annually brings together the Baltic and European industry.”

It should be noted that Sarajevo’s CineLink Drama will be, from next year, the second stop of the nine-month programme since TV Launch will start in April 2020 in the Czech Republic and the submissions will open in October 2019 (for more information).
