The Netherlands Film Fund, the country’s main film agency, has recently confirmed its support for a new raft of productions through its successful Film Production Incentive. These contributions will generate over €38.1 million in production spend across the entire spectrum of Dutch film professionals and film companies. In detail, 18 fiction features, four documentary features, one animated feature, four drama series and one documentary series (including 14 international co-productions) will be in receipt of financing.

The big winner of this slate of funding is Matthijs van Heijningen Jr’s The Forgotten Battle (€1,500,000), a war drama penned by Paula van der Oest, and produced by Levitate Film and Belgian outfit Caviar. The plot is set in 1944 and centres on a Dutchman conscripted into the Wehrmacht, a British glider pilot and a local girl who joins the underground resistance. The characters will make fundamental choices that will have consequences for their own lives, and for Europe’s freedom.

Moreover, the grant of the biggest magnitude for a TV series went to Willem Bosch and Pieter Kuijpers’ IRA: The Dutch Connection (produced by Pupkin Film, €963,259), a TV series set in the early 1990s and revolving around detective Sjoerd Maes, who is involved in the fight against Irish terrorists, international bureaucracy and opposing intelligence services.

Finally, other TV series in receipt of the incentive are Lisa Siwe’s family drama US (produced by 100% Halal Productions and British partners Drama Republic and Bandstand Productions, €104,720), Sander Burger’s three-episode biographical documentary The Sad Champion (staged by Bind & Willink, €141,202), Michiel van Erp’s romantic drama In Memoriam (a De Familie production, €593,570) and Arne Toonen’s musical comedy Camp Kookiness (produced by NL Film & TV, €419,416).
