As confirmed last week by lead actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, the fourth instalment in the hit British sitcom series The Trip has started shooting in Greece, with Michael Winterbottom behind the camera once again. The comedy travelogue series The Trip, the brainchild of Coogan, Brydon and Winterbottom, was first aired in 2010, when the lead actors were playing fictionalised versions of themselves while on a restaurant tour in the North of England. After enjoying huge success, the team shifted their culinary adventures to Southern Europe, with the first stop being Italy in 2014. The latest escapade was The Trip to Spain, which aired in 2017, and Greece will apparently be the next stop on their Mediterranean gastronomic adventure.

Running for six episodes, The Trip to Greece will follow the same pattern as the previous series, simultaneously being a mockumentary, an offbeat sitcom, and a food and travel show. The comedy duo will embark on a road trip around Greece, but while Ulysses needed ten years to get back home to Ithaca from Troy, Steve and Rob have only six days on their own personal odyssey. On the way, they argue about tragedy and comedy, astronomy and biology, myths, history, democracy and the meaning of life. Some of the spots that they will be visiting are the Temple of Apollo at Delphi and the Ancient Agora of Athens, Kavala and Ancient Stagira in the north of Greece, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Nestor’s Palace and Niokastro Fortress in Pylos, along with the Caves of Diros in the Peloponnese, the unique island of Hydra and many hotels and restaurants in Lesvos, Pelion and Chalkidiki. The Hellenic Film Commission of the Greek Film Centre provided guidance and facilitated the filming permits for the archaeological sites.

Jon Mountague, Sky’s head of comedy, stated: “What a joy to go island hopping with the incomparable Steve and Rob. Greece is the birthplace of democracy but, more importantly, the birthplace of Michael Winterbottom’s latest vision, which we can’t wait to share with our customers. Yamas!”

The Trip to Greece is being produced by Melissa Parmenter and Josh Haynes for Revolution Films, with Baby Cow and Small Man Productions. The series was commissioned by Jon Mountague and Zai Bennett for Sky One, with Josh Cole acting as the commissioning editor. Tristan Whalley, of Goalpost, is handling the world sales.
