As announced earlier this year (see the news), First Cut Lab (FCL), the workshop for feature-length fiction films in the editing phase, will boast the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) as its second hub and will be present at Kosovo for the first time as well. Furthermore, the workshop, headed up by Matthieu Darras along with editor and editorial consultant Benjamin Mirguet, is expanding further with a number of new European collaborations.

What’s more, the FCL will also be pressing on with its expansion around Europe during the second half of 2019, with three new workshops and a recurring one. More precisely, two Finnish films will participate in the first-ever FCL Finland, set to take place from 11-14 September in Helsinki. Kari Paljakka, film commissioner at the Finnish Film Foundation, stated: “FCL is a new and exciting method and concept that will raise the bar and bring Finnish films to international audiences.” Straight afterwards, from 16-21 September, and as an integral part of the 44th Gdynia Film Festival, the fifth edition of FCL Poland will invite two Polish projects to participate and will once again be supported by the Polish Film Institute.

The first edition of FCL Turkey is being organised in cooperation with the Bosphorus Film Festival and will unspool from 21-25 October in Istanbul, where three Turkish projects will be selected. The festival’s artistic director, Emrah Kılıç, commented: “We are so glad to have reached an agreement with FCL. Three selected teams will receive tailor-made advice from a consulting editor and expert feedback from top international film professionals. The projects will be able to increase their sales potential and festival circulation.”

Finally, the RE-ACT (Regional Audiovisual Cooperation and Training) initiative will also host an initial session of FCL to support local talents and films. The initiative, which is being organised by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund and the Slovenian Film Centre, with Film Center Serbia recently coming on board, will invite four projects (one from each participating member) to partake in a workshop in mid-November.

In parallel with these collaborations, the FCL core team is also being fleshed out. Wim Vanacker is joining as editorial consultant, and he will be directing and running the workshops. The rest of the team, aside from director Matthieu Darras, includes consultant editors Benjamin Mirguet and Matthieu Taponier, and programme manager Maartje Alders.
