The film portrays a father and son, their incredible adventure on the road while travelling from Eastern Italy to the deserted streets of the Balkans, and their affectionate, amusing, problematic and unusual relationship. “One of the protagonists of the film, the boy’s biological father, is a singer,” writes Gabriele Salvatores in the director’s notes sent out by the producers. “He sings Domenico Modugno songs at weddings and parties in and around Dalmatia. The lyrics of one of these songs, ‘Che cosa sono le nuvole’ [lit. ‘What Are the Clouds’], were written by Pier Paolo Pasolini. One particular line in it struck a chord with me: ‘And all my crazy love is blown away by the wind, just like this.’ I’ve always thought of our leading boy as one of the Shakespearean ‘fools’, one of those mad buffoons who succeed in keeping kings and queens under their thumb, forcing them to make amends with themselves. And, in this case, compelling them to draw on whatever love they still have at their disposal. ‘Crazy’ and ‘Love’. Hence the title of the movie: Volare.”

The film’s screenplay was penned by Umberto Contarello and Sara MosettiItalo Petriccione was the DoP, the editing was entrusted to Massimo Fiocchi, while Rita Rabassini was responsible for the production design, and the score was composed by talented musician Mauro Pagani.

Volare is a production by Indiana Production with RAI Cinema, in co-production with EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani, and it will be distributed by 01 DistributionRAI Com is handling the international sales. Impacto Cine has already bought the rights for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.
