A melancholic, retro sci-fi that investigates a territory’s past and present, Serpentarius follows a young man (João Arrais) on a journey through a post-apocalyptic African landscape. Having embarked on a quest to find his late mother’s bird, he may as well be looking for the reasons that made his mother stay behind, while he went to live on another continent. The endeavour will lead him not only through a variety of landscapes, but also through different periods in the history of a country that remains unnamed. As the film wanders off into various ages and movie genres, the young traveller clad in jeans and a pair of sunglasses becomes a colonialist sporting a ruff, a slick cowboy, and an astronaut floating around a retro spaceship. Melancholic thoughts rendered in voice-over (the director himself is the male narrator) accompany him throughout his journey.
Serpentarius was written and shot by Conceição himself, who also edited the film (with the support of Mariana Gaivão and António Gonçalves) and decided on the music (together with Hugo Leitão). Rafael Gonçalves Cardoso was the sound editor. The film was produced by Portugal’s Mirabilis (Carlos Conceição, António Gonçalves and Margarida Ventura), and Agência – Portuguese Short Film Agency is handling the world sales.
