Three new TV projects – a comedy, an adaptation of Michel Houellebecq’s Submission and a crime series – have each received €50,000 worth of script-development support. The grants were issued by the German-French Funding Committee for television projects, which brings together Germany’s FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg (MFG), and France’s Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) and Région Grand Est.

The television adaptation of Michel Houellebecq’s novel Submission, penned by Guillaume Nicloux, Nathalie Leutherau and Victor Rodenbach, is among the projects selected to receive funding. Like the novel, the series of the same name will focus on François, a middle-aged literature professor who is going through an existential crisis. His life changes when the Muslim Party comes to power in France. During the transition period, François begins to experience love and desire once again, and is compelled to re-examine his beliefs. Submission is being produced by Maze Pictures (Germany) and Incognita Films (France). The new project by Noé Debré, the co-writer of Jacques Audiard’s Palme d’Or-winning Dheepan [+lire aussi :

fiche film], has also received funding. The comedy series Parliament will focus on the employees of the European Parliament, who are responsible for more than 500 million civilians. The first season will follow Samy, an unemployed man who finds a cause he is willing to invest all his energy in. Parliament is being produced by Germany’s Polyphon Pictures and France’s Cinétévé. 

34, a new series penned by Kenan Görgün and Katrin Merkel, has also received financial support. The story follows Idil, Istanbul’s first criminal investigator to wear an Islamic scarf, and Murat, a corrupt cop who has given up on all of his ideals, as they try to solve the complicated case of a mullah found dead in a brothel. The series is being produced by Augenschein Filmproduktion (Germany), and French companies Agat Films & Cie and Unité de Production.
