is the most-viewed Portuguese film of the year, as it has recently surpassed the remarkable threshold of 45,600 admissions. This is an important result for a domestic movie in a relatively small film market such as Portugal. Ferreira’s feature is followed by Luís Ismael’s action flick Bad Investigate [+lire aussi :

The movie is an adaptation of A Trança de Inês, written by late author Rosa Lobato de Faria, and inspired by the historical events relating to Portuguese king Dom Pedro, who exhumed his mistress, Inês de Castro, in order to make her into a queen posthumously. In particular, the script, penned by Ferreira himself, tells the story of Dom Pedro (Diogo Amaral), a man admitted to a psychiatric hospital for travelling by car with the corpse of his beloved, and is set in three different periods – namely, the 14th century, the modern day and a dystopian future. The main cast includes actors Joana de Verona (Amor Amor [+lire aussi :

), among others. The drama was produced by the Portuguese and Brazilian divisions of Persona Non Grata Pictures and Coimbra-based Diálogos Atómicos, in association with MPM Film (France), domestic outfit Riot Films and Refinaria Filmes (Brazil).

To date, The Dead Queen has earned €182,130 at the national box office and has had 1,864 screenings; Bad Investigate has grossed €241,813 (2,354 screenings) and Soldado Milhões €119,479 (1,770 screenings). Nevertheless, the animated Pixar film Incredibles 2 remains at the top of the overall box-office chart, with over 605,000 admissions and a profit of €3,188,042 (15,596 screenings).

The Dead Queen has been released across 40 screens and is being distributed by Nós Audiovisuais in Portugal and Pandora Filmes in Brazil.
