MON PÈRE EST INGÉNIEUR

de Robert Guédiguian

synopsis

While a voice-over recounts the Nativity, setting Christ's birth in Provence, Natacha imagines herself as the Virgin Mary, pregnant with Jesus, stumbling along Marseilles's disused quays. Her Joseph is Jérémie, the man she loved in her youth, the man she still loves and whom she hasn't seen in years, except when catching glimpses of him on TV, standing beside the Health Minister. Jérémie has become someone important. He travels the world while Natacha is now a neighborhood doctor; she stayed behind in the city where she was born, in the neighborhood she grew up in. Nevertheless, Jérémie is now close beside her, but she's totally unaware of it. Natacha is no longer aware of anything. Her father found her in this state, inert, mute, one day not so long ago. "Psychic shock," the doctors say. People get her out of bed, she gets out of bed, they sit her down, she sits down, they feed her, she eats. Jérémie moves in with Natacha. He sits where she used to sit, listens to music she used to listen to and memories flood back to him. They were fourteen years old and studying Russian. Jérémie was unable to pronounce "My father is an engineer." They loved each other, passionately. Every year, observing a ritual they'd established, they'd decided whether or not to continue their relationship. One day, they decided to end it and Jérémie headed far away, out into the world. Now Jérémie is back, but he doesn't know yet if he's going to stay. As he tries to find out what happened to Natacha, he comes into contact with people she knew, feels love for people she loved, takes care of patients she was taking care of. He's like someone taking a stroll in a life that's not his own.
