EFP's Shooting Stars are 10 of the most promising young actors from all over Europe, chosen by a select jury of film industry professionals for their formidable talent and undeniable potential. Cineuropa as met with each talent for an interview in collaboration with Nisi Masa and Cafebabel.

 

Mikkel Boe Følsgaard (DENMARK)

 

A year before graduating from the Danish National School of Theatre, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard was cast to play the role of the insane King Christian VII in Nikolaj Arcel's A Royal Affair. This first screen acting performance earned him - as the first Dane ever - a Silver Bear as Best Actor at the 2012 Berlinale. Mikkel is currently one of the leads in the TV series The Legacy which is being directed by actress-filmmaker Pernilla August.

 

 

Christa Théret (FRANCE)

 

Christa Théret had a breakthrough success in 2008 with the lead role in Lisa Azuelos' blockbuster LOL which garnered her a nomination for the César for Best Promising Actress. A second César nomination followed for her role in Emmanuelle Millet's La Brindille, for which Christa was named Best Emerging Talent in Rome. Recently, she could be seen in Jean-Pierre Ameris' Victor Hugo adaptation L'homme qui rit which premiered in Venice as well as in Gilles Bourdos' Renoir that was selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival 2012.

 

 

Ada Condeescu (ROMANIA)

 

A graduate in Acting at Bucharest's National University of Theatre and Film, Ada Condeescu made her film acting debut in Florin Serban's award-winning If I Want to Whistle, i Whistle which premiered at the 2010 Berlinale. She followed this with another two lead roles: in Catalin Mitulescu's second film Loverboy, which was shown in Cannes' Un Certain Regard in 2011, and Bogdan Mustata's feature debut Wolf.

 

 

Carla Juri (SWITZERLAND)

 

After studying acting in the USA and the UK, Carla Juri has won the Swiss Film Prize on two occasions: in 2012 for Xavier Koller's Someone Like Me and in 2011 for Cihan Inan's 180º. As a multilingual actress, she has appeared in films in Switzerland, Germany, England and Italy, including the lead in Alex Walker's Fossil and in David Wnendt's Feuchtgebiete.

 

 

Arta Dobroshi (REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO)

 

Arta Dobroshi came into the international spotlight with the title role in the Dardenne brothers' The Silence of Lorna which premiered at Cannes in 2008 and earned her a Best Actress nomination at the European Film Awards. She began a collaboration with Daniel Mulloy on his short Baby, and has starred in and produced their latest film Atis. Her performance in Catherine Corsini's Three Worlds won her the The Barbara Tipple Best Actress Award at the Women's International Film & Television Showcase in Los Angeles 2012 and PriFest.

 

 

Jure Henigman (SLOVENIA)

 

After working successfully in theatre, Jure has attracted attention with his performance in Nejc Gazvoda's A Trip, winning the Best Actor prizes at the Slovenian Film Festival and the Nashville Film Festival as well as being named Best Actor by Stop Magazine Award. He followed this with a part in Martin Turk's debut Feed Me with your words and has just completed work on his second film with Gazvoda, the love story Dual

 

 

Saskia Rosendhal (GERMANY)

 

19 year-old Saskia Rosendahl first caught everyone's attention with her leading title role in Cate Shortland's Lore after previously appearing in a small part in Wolfgang Dinslage's Für Elise. Since finishing school, she has had a supporting role in Vivian Naefe's Taste of Apple Seeds and is one of the leads in French director Denis Dercourt's Happy Birthday which was shooting in Germany in autumn 2012. Saskia won the "Aussie Oscar" (AACTA - Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards) in the category Best Young Actor for her performance in Lore. Up next for Saskia is Wir Sind Jung. Wir Sind Stark, directed by Burhan Qurbani.

 

 

Nermina Lukac (SWEDEN)

 

Montenegrin-born Nermina Lukac was cast after an open audition for the female lead in Gabriela Pichler's feature debut Eat Sleep Die. Her performance as a feisty, "take no shit" Muslim Swedish-Balkan factory worker has already earned her numerous awards including a Special Mention at the Zurich Film Festival, the Best Actress Award at the festivals in Seville and Amiens, and the Viasat Film Rising Star at the Stockholm International Film Festival. This year, she has recently won the Swedish National Guldbagge Award for Best Actress (Eat Sleep Die).

 

 

Laura Birn (FINLAND)

 

Laura Birn is already one of Finland's most luminous stars. She landed the female lead in Perttu Leppä's Pearls and Pigs in 2002 before taking up her studies at Helsinki's Theatre Academy where she graduated in 2007. Since then, she has had leads in several films, TV series and stage plays, and is best known for her roles as young Aliide in Antti Jokinen's Purge and Iiris in Aku Louhimies' Naked Harbour. Laura won the Jussi Award in the category Best Actress in a leading role for her performance in Purge.

 

 

Luca Marinelli (ITALY)

 

2010 saw Luca Marinelli attracted wide attention after his first film role in Saverio Costanzo's The Solitude of Prime Numbers which premiered in Venice. He returned to Venice in 2011 playing a transsexual in Gian Alfonso Pacinotti's The Last Man on Earth. He can now be seen in a lead role in Paolo Virzi's romantic comedy Every Blessed Day.
