The 34th edition of Filmfest Dresden, dedicated to international short films, took place from 5 to 10 April. After two special editions during the pandemic, it returned to its spring dates. Besides a selection of special programmes including a focus on shorts from Bulgaria, another one on Québec, showing shorts about gender diversity and offering a retrospective on Steffen Reck and Kurt Weiler, the festival had three main competitions.

Prizes worth a total of €71,000 were given by several juries composed of professionals from the film industry, as well as of young film enthusiasts, to shorts in the international, national and regional competition. The jury in charge of the international competition gave a Golden Horseman for the Best Animation to Anxious Body by Yoriko Mizushiri. This French-Japanese production, a dynamic, enigmatic but highly suggestive trip into the a woman's nervous state of mind, received €7,500. A special mention went to Terra Incognita (France, Denmark) by Dexter Adrian and Kjaer Pernille.

The Horseman for the Best International Short Film with an equal prize of €7,500 went to Heltzear by Spanish director Mikel Gurrea. The drama is set in 2000 in San Sebastian, while the Basque conflict is ongoing, and depicts the story of a strong female protagonist. A special mention went to Orthodontics by Mohammadreza Mayghani from Iran. Two more Golden Horsemen were awarded in the international competition, one given by the audience to Mily Tati (Love, Dad) by Diana Cam Van Nguyen (Czech Republic, Slovakia) winning €3,000, and the Golden Horseman from the youth jury, which went to Techno, Mama by Saulius Baradinskas from Lithuania, receiving €2,000. The youth jury gave a special mention to the poetic and funny animation Sierra by Sander Joon from Estonia.

The award for the Best Animation Film in the national competition went to Night by Ahmad Saleh, winning €3,000, while To the Last Drop by Simon Schnellmann received a special mention. The Horseman for the Best National Short Film was awarded to Handbook by Pavel Mozhar, a a Germany-Belarus experimental documentary reconstructing the horrors of a violent regime that has a sober but impressive aesthetic and received the prize money of €3,000. The film also won a second award, namely the “fully political – Short Film Award of the Saxon State Centre for Political Education” award. The Golden Horseman from the Audience in the national competition went to Not the 80s by Marleen Valien and the Golden Horseman from the youth jury to That Divine Cadaver by Leonhard Hofmann, receiving €4,000 and €2,000 respectively.

As for the regional competition, the Audience Award with €2,000 went to Alison Kuhn's cynical Fluffy Tales, about a model who has to do a very particular photo-shooting for a dog food advertisement.
