US documentarian Frederick Wiseman will be given the Carrosse d’Or (also known as the Golden Coach) handed out by the French Directors’ Association (SRF) at the opening ceremony of the 53rd Directors’ Fortnight, which will unspool from 7-17 July as an integral part of the 74th Cannes Film Festival.

Born in Boston in 1930 and singled out with an Honorary Oscar in 2017, Frederick Wiseman presented Boxing Gym in the Directors’ Fortnight in 2010 and National Gallery there in 2014. His film Hospital (1970) was screened in the Cannes Classics programme in 2016. He also took part in the Venice competition in 2017 with City Hall, among other prestigious events.

Intended to reward a filmmaker chosen for the pioneering qualities of their films, their boldness, and the rigour of their direction and production, the Carrosse d’Or (which was first handed out in 2002) has, in the past, been awarded to Jacques Rozier, Clint Eastwood, Nanni Moretti, Ousmane Sembene, David Cronenberg, Alain Cavalier, Jim Jarmusch, Naomi Kawase, Agnès Varda, Jafar Panahi, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Jane Campion, Alain Resnais, Jia Zhangke, Aki Kaurismäki, Werner Herzog, Martin Scorsese and John Carpenter.
