. The story, penned by the helmer herself, follows two sisters, 13-year-old Anastasia and nine-year-old Diana. When the head of the orphanage tells them that the Johnson family from the USA wants to adopt them, Diana feels as if she’s won the lottery and cannot wait to go to the States. Anastasia, on the other hand, has mixed feelings. She is hoping to live with her biological mother, who makes a sudden return to their lives.

The film’s main cast includes Emma Skirmante, Gerda Aljēna, Katrīna Krēsliņa and Iveta Pole. The technical crew members are DoP Aleksandrs Grebņevs, production designer Laura Dišlere and costume designer Sieglinde Michaeler. Shot in Latvia and Italy in both English and Latvian, the movie’s principal photography is currently under way.

Writer-director Olte disclosed to Cineuropa some further details about her project: “Anastasia’s story is about the search for one’s identity, about the possibility of disrupting the scenario that life has predetermined for us. Based on a true story, I want to follow a 13-year-old girl’s search for her roots, her struggle for attention, love and care from her mother. The rules of social survival in an orphanage are tough, and everyone has to fight for their individuality. My film will reflect the social reality of an undermined group in contemporary Latvia. As we tell the story of Anastasia, Julia [their older sister who has now grown up and leads her life outside of the orphanage] and Diana, we are also telling the stories of numerous children in the system, as their fates tend to be similar.”

Sisters is being staged by Matīss Kaža, Una Celma and Dace Siatkovska for Latvia’s Fenixfilm, and by Debora Nischler for Italy’s Albolina Film. The project also received support from the National Film Centre of Latvia, IDM South Tyrol and Eurimages. The drama will be ready for release in spring 2022.
