Wallonie Bruxelles Images, the official agency for the promotion of the audiovisual output of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation abroad, now has a new director in the guise of Hervé Le Phuez.

Before taking over at the helm of this agency, Le Phuez spent more than 20 years working on programming at the Namur International Francophone Film Festival and, in fact, took over programming duties a few years ago. There, he contributed to shining a spotlight on young talents, both behind and in front of the camera, by focusing specifically on short films and setting up various professional workshops, such as Génération Talents, open to young actors and actresses, and La Manufacture, aimed at up-and-coming filmmakers graduating from French-language film schools all over the world.

Today, he dives headfirst into a new challenge: helping Belgian film talents to make waves abroad. “I am very enthusiastic to be joining Wallonie Bruxelles Images today,” he stated. “The challenges are, and will be, manifold because of the health crisis that has already been crippling the sector for (nearly) a year. As a result, it’s of paramount importance that we be present alongside all of the professionals in the sector, work hand in hand with them and support them as they gain international visibility.”

Indeed, at a time when certain festivals have to be repeatedly postponed, while others may even see the cancellation of two editions, and as sales and co-production markets reinvent themselves online, the work of promotional agencies is complex and must aim to break through to new territories.

Hervé Le Phuez succeeds Eric Franssen, who left last summer to manage the Palace, an ambitious new cinema that reopened recently in the heart of Brussels.
