Shooting has wrapped on Santa Lucia, the debut work by the 29-year-old Neapolitan screenwriter and director Marco Chiappetta. Led by Renato Carpentieri and Andrea Renzi who are cast as two brothers, the film is produced by Teatri Uniti – the long-standing theatre company directed by Toni Servillo which has supported cinema productions such as Morte di un matematico napoletano and L’amore molesto by Mario Martone, as well as One Man Up [+lee también:

The film recounts the return to Naples, following forty years spent in Buenos Aires, of Roberto, a writer who is now blind, of his meeting with his brother Lorenzo and of the troubling past which emerges from their childhood memories, set against the backdrop of the city as we’ve never seen it before. “Naples is the protagonist of this story”, the director insists, “almost dream-like, spectral and crepuscular, a seemingly deserted city. We don’t see the passers-by, the cars or the mopeds, the women yelling from down below or from balconies, or the children in the street. We see no characters other than the protagonists themselves, but we’re alerted to the vitality of the city through the sounds and voices of its inhabitants”.

Besides the two protagonists, the cast also includes Bianca Maria D'Amato, Antonia Marrone, Edoardo Sorgente and Alfredo Ciruzzi, and the very young Giuseppe Festinese, Manuel Carolla and Suami Puglia.

“30 years on from Morte di un matematico napoletano by Mario Martone and 20 since One Man Up”, remarks producer Angelo Curti, “entranced by the astonishing debut screenplay written by this young Neapolitan, we were able, alongside Teatri Uniti, to reassemble most of the creative team from Paolo Sorrentino’s first work”. Aside from the film’s co-star Andrea Renzi, this includes editor Giogiò Franchini, set designer Lino Fiorito, Daghi Rondanini on sound and Costanza Boccardi on casting, as well as costume designer Giovanna Napolitano and director of photography Antonio Grambone.

Santa Lucia is made with the backing of MIBACT and the support of the Campania Region.
